This paper explores the use of autonomous vehicles (AVs) for real-time monitoring of road infrastructure to detect issues like potholes and cracks. It highlights the benefits of integrating technology for early problem detection, which can improve road safety, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance overall transportation efficiency. The findings suggest that AVs can significantly improve maintenance response times and decrease accident rates associated with road conditions.

Abstract

This paper examines the deployment of AVs as dynamic tools in real-time

monitoring and assessment of road infrastructure. The analysis is basically about
how to detect road surface problems that include potholes, cracks, and
obstructions through continuous monitoring and evaluation of road conditions by
integrating sensors, cameras, and mobile apps. Results indicate how AVs will
bring dynamic enhancements over today's traditional techniques due to
continuous, accurate, and effective information about road conditions. The
implications of these capabilities for road maintenance strategies, traffic safety,
and overall transportation efficiency are also discussed.

Introduction
That is how using AVs will help keep our roads safe and, at the same time, in
good condition. They have special technology that will be able to sense problems
on the road and alert authorities: huge cracks or holes or anything not supposed
to be there, like trash. When we identify these problems early enough, then we
can fix them quickly enough, so roads will be safe for everyone.
These are the key stakeholders in the project: Roads and Transport Authority
(RTA) and Fujairah Municipality. These are the entities that should be held
accountable for ensuring that the roads are safe. Besides, they are supposed to
adapt new technologies that would serve as a way of improving how these roads
are maintained, lowering the costs in a way that everyone is safe and
comfortably transported. This project will demonstrate that the implementation
of new technologies in the AVs field can offer an alternative solution to allow
roads to be maintained where problems are located and repaired easily. It makes
transportation easier and safer for all community members.

Problem Statement
Road problems such as potholes and construction work are among the major
challenges that drivers face daily around the world. These problems appear
suddenly without warning, and the sudden appearance of these matters leads to
many physical, economic, traffic, and environmental problems.

The most important of these problems are:

1- Traffic accidents: Potholes can lead to loss of control of the car,

especially when the driver tries to quickly pass or avoid them, and this
increases the risk of collisions and traffic accidents.

2- Vehicle damage: Driving over road holes causes major damage to

vehicles, such as tire damage, bent wheels, suspension system damage,
and brake system damage.
3- Impact on physical safety: Driving over large or rough potholes leads to
major negative effects on drivers and passengers, such as back pain or
physical injuries due to severe vibrations or sudden movements, as
studies show that 60% of drivers are exposed to physical injuries due to
unpaved roads.

4- Delayed transportation: Potholes slow down traffic and may cause

many traffic jams, especially when drivers try to avoid them.

5- Increased maintenance costs: Potholes make roads more vulnerable to

damage, and this increases maintenance and repair costs for vehicles and
infrastructure.

6- Environmental impacts: Congestion and sudden accidents resulting

from potholes and road problems lead to the leakage of hazardous
materials such as oils and fuel and increased carbon dioxide production,
which harms the environment.

7- Psychological stress: Driving in areas full of potholes causes stress,

fatigue and exhaustion for drivers due to the need to constantly focus to
avoid these obstacles.

These problems appear suddenly without warning, and the sudden appearance
of these problems leads to sudden stops by drivers, which increases the
possibility of accidents, injuries and congestion. These problems do not stop only
that, but they also have a big impact on car damage and physical injuries such
as back and spine pain. In addition, these problems and potholes have led to
traffic inattention and increased congestion for drivers, which negatively affects
the overall driving experience. In the absence of effective monitoring and real-
time tracking of the status, these problems remain present for a very long time
before they are addressed and resolved.

Studies show that potholes cause about 33% of accidents annually in the United
States, resulting in repair costs estimated at $3 billion. In the UK, 1 of 10 road
accidents are caused by potholes, and 60% of drivers experience physical
injuries such as back pain due to these sudden road disturbances. In addition,
congestion and stress among drivers are increased by construction work and
unexpected obstacles, which account for 22% of road accidents. With delayed
road maintenance, these problems are exacerbated and have a significant
impact on the economy, with reports indicating losses of up to 2% of GDP in
some countries. However, experiments in Germany and Japan have shown that
the use of modern technologies like autonomous vehicles equipped with sensors
can improve the speed of maintenance response by 40% and reduce
infrastructure-related accidents by 25%. Therefore, developing these technical
solutions will contribute to improving road maintenance strategies, increasing
traffic safety, and reducing health risks, which will enhance transportation
efficiency and make roads safer.
