This project aims to design an effective filter that allows only the
fundamental frequency of a triangular waveform to pass, while
attenuating higher order harmonics. Positioned at the output of an
inverter that converts DC to AC; this filter will ensure a clean sinusoidal
signal which significantly enhance output quality for various
applications.
Type of filter:
In this project, we are going to use a band-pass filter. Our group has been
allocated a frequency of 7500 Hz, which is a significant advantage for our project.
We choose band-pass filter because:
A band-pass filter works to screen out frequencies that are too low or too
high, giving easy passage only to frequencies within a certain range.
Band-pass filters can be made by stacking a low-pass filter on the end of a
high-pass filter or vice versa.
Design Criteria:
We have to build a RLC circuit with these parameters:
1. Resonance frequency:7500hz
2. Bandwidth:4712.4rad/s=750hz
3. Lower cut off frequency=7109.8hz
4. Higher cut of frequency=7875hz
5. Voltage=5v
Filter circuit diagram:
The circuit consists of a series RLC configuration.
Calculations justifying the component values of the designed circuit:
Given that,
Resonance frequency, f0=7500hz
We know,
Wr=7500*2π=47124rad/s
Say, the quality factor for this rlc circuit is 10.
Q=10
We know,
Bandwidth, B=Wr/Q
=47124/10
=4712.4 rad/s
Lower cut off frequency, WL=Wr-B/2
=47124-(4712.4/2)=44667.8 rad/s=7109.8hz
Higher cut off frequency, WH=Wr+B/2
=47124+(47124/2)=49480.2 rad/s=7875hz
We picked a resistor of 470Ω(Power rating:0.5W)
We know,
B=R/L
L=R/B=470/4712.4=0.0997H
So, the value of the inductor is,L=0.0997H
Again,
Wr=1/√(𝐿𝐶)
C=1/(Wr)^2 * (L)
=4.5nF
Power calculation for these components:
Z=470∠0 ( at resonance condition)
I=V/Z=0.01063 A
1
Vc=0.01063*( )=50∠-90V
𝑗∗2𝜋∗7500∗4.51∗10^−9
VL=0.01063*(7500*2π*99*10^-3)=49.59∠90
Vr=0.01063*470=5V
Pr=1/2VmIm=0.5*5*0.01063=0.04075watt
N.b: All these component’s voltage consumption is within range. So
these components are safe to use.
