Welcome to the paediatric department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital - we hope you enjoy your time
on the course.

Clinical Experience:
Students will be given learning opportunities in all major paediatric clinical settings including:
. Paediatric Emergency
. Outpatients
. Surgery
. Community Clinics
. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
. Inpatients Wards:
. Neptune – General Paediatrics
. Jupiter – Adolescent Unit
. Mercury – Paediatric Surgery and Gastroenterology
. Paediatric High Dependency Unit (PHDU)
Students will spend time in their core hospitals at Weeks 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7

.Any changes to the programme will be advised by email
. ALL ABSENCES must be recorded using the online absence reporting form as well as informing the course
administrator and course leads
. Please identify one person in each tutor group to act as a ‘contact’ for the tutor to
advise of any changes to arranged meetings.
. Mock PACES will be held in Week 6 - please note this is mandatory to attend. - Please also note that this is
different to "In Course Paces Assessment".

. Please ensure you sign in for ALL scheduled teaching sessions, absences will be followed up on.

Each student has been allocated an individual number which is your place on the rota. Please ensure that you do not swap
student numbers within your groups.

You have been divided into 5 groups of 4 students. In some rotations there will be fewer than four per group.

Each group will rotate together through NICU, wards and HDU, outpatients (including community clinics) and paediatric
surgery.

 TUTOR GROUPS

Please identify one person in each tutor group to act as a ‘contact’ for the tutor to advise of any changes to arranged
meetings.
- During the first week, you must contact your tutor to arrange a time and place to meet as a group. Your tutor and you
will arrange to see you as a group every core week. This time has been set aside to further develop your clinical skills and
reinforce important topics.
- Tutor sessions take precedence and must always be attended.
- Tutors may change tutorial times so please stay in close contact.
- You will find contact details on page 4
- Please notify the Course Adminstrator if you experience any problems with contacting your tutor.
- Please note that these sessions take priority over all other teaching (apart from Wednesday seminars).
- If you have difficulty contacting your tutor please contact the course team as soon as possible.
- If you are allocated two tutors please contact the liaise with the Lead tutor in the first instance.

Course PACES), final tutor sign off, catch up on ED shifts.
 PAEDIATRIC EMERGENCY

You will work a shift system in the Emergency Department. During this time you will be part of the team in the
department and will shadow them. At the start of each shift introduce yourself to the doctor in charge. You should see
and clerk new patients (if deemed appropriate by the triage nurse) and then present your findings to one of the doctors.
The team is expecting to have students and involve you. This is a busy clinical environment and a great opportunity to see
many children with a range of acute presentations.

. Each student will have 8 or 9 shifts in the Emergency Department, including at least one weekend shift, but
possibly more. The weekend shifts allow students to be distributed evenly to avoid congestion of students on at
any time.
. There are days off during the week to make up for weekend shifts worked.
. Shifts can be swapped, but there should never be more than three students per shift and ideally two students per
shift. This will impact on your experience if there are too many students per shift.

. Tutor sessions take precedence and must always be attended

. Each student usually works one Saturday or Sunday shift

Accommodation:
An On-Call room is available for students starting or finishing shifts at unsociable hours. The key for this room can be
collected from Ruqayyah Chaudhry (0203 315 5938) in the UMO on the Lower Ground Floor. A deposit of £35 is required.
The key must be collected by 5pm and returned by 1pm the next day. The key must not be passed to another student or
you risk losing your deposit.

. You will have been allocated a letter, please see the attached shift timetable for details
. Wards: Neptune (general patients), Mercury (surgical/gastro) , Jupiter (adolescents) and PHDU (Paediatric High
Dependency Unit)
. Please meet in the PHDU Handover Room at 08.30 every morning.
. Two students will join the HDU ward round, two students will join the general ward round.
. During the week you will be part of the medical team. You should aim to clerk new admissions, present cases on ward
rounds and in handover, and accompany the team on the wards.

followed by case presentations at 2.00pm. Course Administrator will final send details of this on mondays.
 NEONATAL UNIT

You will attend the neonatal unit for two days,

Thursday and Friday in your rotation.

The Neonatal Unit is situated on the 3rd Floor at

the front of the hospital. Please arrive at 0800 on
Thursday and 0830 on Friday for the SHO journal
club and report to the attending consultant. Please
see timetable below.
It is recommended that a member of
your group contacts the neonatal unit the
day before your allocated day to confirm
SHO journal club is going ahead.

This is a great opportunity to complete your new born baby check which needs to be completed as part of your
paediatric systems examinations. This will be assessed by one of the consultants.

You will attend paediatric surgery for two days, Monday and Tuesday in your rotation.

• When you are doing surgery you should contact the SHO (bleep 0212) for details of the surgical ward round at
8.00am.
• Students will then spend a half day in theatre.
• Please call paediatric theatres (x52744) to check what time the list starts.
• ALL students to attend Friday lunchtime teaching
• You may also attend paediatric surgery outpatient clinics on Thursday and Friday during your outpatient allocation.

. You are advised to attend at least one general paediatric clinic and one specialty clinic. Please coordinate
within your groups.

. AM clinics start at 09:00, PM clinics at 13:30 (pm start time varies by clinic).
. Please introduce yourself to nurse in charge of the outpatient department on the day of your allocation
and confirm which clinics are running
. Maximum one student per clinic in most cases: so please coordinate with fellow students
