The document proposes the creation of modular Living Air Tiles designed to improve urban air quality by incorporating moss, microalgae, and a self-watering system. These tiles are innovative as they are self-watering, replaceable, and equipped with pollution sensors that change LED colors based on air quality. The document also outlines testing methods and potential challenges that need to be addressed for successful implementation.

Living Air Tiles

Problem

Cities have polluted air, but walls and buildings don't help clean it.

Idea

Create modular wall tiles containing:

 Moss

 Microalgae

 Moisture-retaining gel

 Small rainwater channel

The tiles absorb:

 CO₂

 Dust

 Nitrogen oxides

During rain, the channels collect water to keep the moss alive.

Innovation

Unlike green walls, every tile is:

 Self-watering

 Replaceable

 Measures pollution using a built-in sensor

 Changes LED colour based on air quality

Could be installed on schools, bus stops, flyovers.

How to make it INSPIRE-worthy

Instead of just a moss tile, design a Smart Living Air Tile with unique features:

 Self-watering: Rainwater flows through tiny channels in the tile, so it rarely needs manual
watering.

 Dust-capturing surface: A textured outer layer traps airborne dust before it reaches the
moss.

 Replaceable plant cartridge: The moss or plants can be swapped without replacing the
whole tile.

 Modular design: Tiles snap together like building blocks to cover walls of different sizes.

 Low-cost materials: Use recycled plastic, coconut coir, or agricultural waste to make the tile
body.
 Optional sensor module: Add a simple air-quality sensor that shows pollution levels with
LEDs or on a small display.

How you could test it

Judges like measurable results. You could compare:

 Temperature of a normal wall vs. a tiled wall.

 Dust collected over a week.

 Water consumption.

 Plant growth.

 Air humidity near the tile.

Even simple experiments make your project much stronger.

Challenges you'll need to answer

Be prepared if judges ask:

 How will the plants survive in hot summers?

 What happens during long dry periods?

 What is the maintenance cost?

 How heavy is each tile?

 Can it be installed on existing buildings?

Having solutions to these questions will impress them.
