Team Project Component 3

Individual Reflection

Topic: Health and Well-Being

Issue: The stigma of cancer-related hair loss associated with
loss of attractiveness leading to social isolation and emotional
distress.
Aim: Raising awareness about stigma caused my hair loss.

Candidate Name:
Candidate Number:
Centre Number: IN119
Centre Name: Heritage International Xperiential School
Word Count: 999
Series: June 2025
Evaluation Of Action:
We raised awareness in the school. We conducted a survey to check the number of students
aware about this issue. We could successfully change initial low awareness as we put attractive
posters and standees in the school corridors, reception, and lift lobbies. For the final survey we
could see a noticeable change in the knowledge of the students regarding this overlooked issue.
More than 50 students had gained insight on this issue. Additionally we could persuade salon
owners and employees to put posters we made and promote awareness. We visited 6 salons and
made sure they put up the posters. At first they were reluctant, then we explained the gravity of
the issue and then they put up the posters. We might have affected the way people looked at the
issue which ultimately aids in the demolishing of the stigma.
Evaluation Of Own Teamwork:
In my school, blocks change every year so I didn’t have much of an acquaintance with my team
members so it was difficult for me to fit in.
After a month's time, I got comfortable with my team members. One of my team members was
falling behind with their work as they had many other tasks to complete so I suggested to
conduct frequent check-ins so work is complete. Illustratively, one of my team members took
time in choosing the correct format for the standee, so I remember giving out constant reminders.
Furthermore, I was adaptive to the changes which were made. I managed the communication,
then I moved onto video editing. Me and another member simultaneously worked on the video
by continuously making edits over each other's work in order to finalise the best draft. After 3
drafts I figured that the edit that I made was the best so we came to terms after a thorough
discussion. However, next time, I would use my time efficiently so that me and my partner could
come up with more drafts of videos/recorded evidence, so that the outcome would be the best
possible as many ideas would have been evaluated.
Evaluation Of Own Task Performance:
Shortly after starting the team project, I had my mid-semester exams so my work on the project
was significantly compromised. I couldn’t find any time, so I had the Idea of downloading a day
planner app on my devices which helped me to manage my time. I thoroughly used the app
which helped me take time out for research. For more projects, I would prefer to receive more
feedback and suggestions from my team members and teachers to further enhance the quality.
Learning From Research:
Via my research on the national perspectives of stigma of cancer-related hair loss in India, I
analysed perspectives from medical journals and reports. I couldn't fathom the psychological
impact of hair loss, especially the way women face it. I underestimated the extent of this issue,
but after analysing and examining the urgency of the issue I was deeply shaken to see how social
norms affect people. Hair loss leads to anxiety, depression, people would consider hair loss as an
embarrassment to culture and beauty. Research proved that awareness of hair donation in my
country for cancer patients is extremely unheard of and neglected. A report by Lancet Regional
Health states that 17000-18000 organ transplants occur annually in India, whereas only 250 hair
donations happen every year as per ClinicSpots. This allowed me to understand why many
salons are hesitant to participate in our initiative. Initially, I believed; awareness campaigns
wouldn't help much, but now I can see; they address the cultural misconceptions which might
encourage and make the truth of hair loss known.
Learning About Own Skills, Strengths, Weaknesses:
By managing communication of the project, I bolstered my ability to write professional emails
and messages to NGOs, school’s HR department. My strength was research. I contacted and
reached out to a prominent NGO in 2hrs. However I struggled with delegation as I took too many
tasks which reduced my productivity. As I reached to terms with this inefficiency; it was too late,
hence I had to complete whatever was on my plate. Next time, I’ll be careful while taking tasks
to ensure a streamlined process. Additionally, I developed problem-solving skills as we faced
issues in the poster-printing processes which led to delays in the campaign. This crisis taught me
to handle stressful situations while maintaining an equilibrium with other work. Then I worked
with my team members to resolve the issue. To improve I will foster an approach for fast
processes as such issues have no guarantee, thus having some time will allow for no impact on
the outcome.
Reflecting On Teamwork:
Working as a team enabled us to divide tasks based on our strengths, making the process adept.
For example one member handled poster designing, whereas I managed communication. At
times, speed of working caused delays. This experience coached me about efficiency
enhancements, aligning individual approaches being crucial for a team project. Furthermore,
having a team meant that we could support each other, which made tasks feel less overwhelming.
I sometimes struggled to write emails due to many tasks at hand, so a team member pitched in to
help. I realised that relying on someone meant slowed progress if a deadline were to be missed.
This experience showed the importance of balancing teamwork with individual responsibilities.
An issue we faced was task completion, as some members finished their work early while others
lagged behind. Notably, the awareness mails were sent before the posters and standee were set
up. To improve, we could have set clear deadlines to keep everyone on track. During decision
making, disagreements came across, upon choosing the best topic. We struggled to find common
ground, therefore delaying the progress. In recollection, setting clear roles and consulting
concerns openly in structured meetings would have prevented strife and improved efficiency. To
save time, I would recommend each member to do research on the topic they like before
choosing so that every topic can be analysed thoroughly which would save time and bring clarity
to objectives and allow for greater actions.
