Tutorial 7

This tutorial covers calculations related to water supply engineering, including the daily requirements of coagulants FeSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 based on specified doses and water treatment volumes. It also includes an analysis of settling basin efficiency, the design of a rapid gravity filter for a specified population, and the computation of filtration rates and backwashing processes for a filter unit. Each problem requires the application of specific formulas and assumptions related to water treatment engineering.

Water Supply Engineering (CEN 14101)

TUTORIAL 7

1. If the coagulant dose is 25 mg/L as Fe and total water to be treated is 12 MLD (Million
Litres per day), what is the daily requirement of FeSO4 in kgs? (Molecular weight of
FeSO4 = 152, Fe=56, S=32, O=16)

2. If the coagulant dose is 5.5 mg/L as Al and total water to be treated is 10 MLD (Million
Litres per day), what is the daily requirement of Al2(SO4)3 in kgs? (Molecular weight
of Al2(SO4)3 = 342, Al=27, S=32, O=16).

3. A column analysis of a flocculating suspension is run. The initial solids concentration

is 250 mg/L. The resulting matrix is shown below. What will be the overall removal
efficiency of a settling basin which is 3 m deep with a detention time of 1 h and 45 min?

Depth (m) Time (mins)

30 60 90 120 150 180
0.5 133 83 50 38 30 23
1.0 180 125 93 65 55 43
1.5 203 150 118 93 70 58
2.0 213 168 135 110 90 70
2.5 220 180 145 123 103 80
3.0 225 188 155 133 113 95

4. Design a rapid gravity filter for a population of 1,00,000 supplied with water @180 l
per person per day. The rate of filtration is 5000 l/hr/m2. Assume necessary data.

5. A filter unit is 5 m by 10 m. After filtering 10,000 m3 per day in 24 hour period, the
filter is backwashed at the rate of 10 l/m2/sec for 15 mins. Time lost in cleaning is 0.5
hour. Compute the average filtration rate, quantity and the percentage of treated water
used in washing.
