Tutorial 8

The document outlines the design specifications for a water treatment plant processing 60,000 m3/day, including calculations for alum dosage, flocculation basin dimensions, power requirements, and paddle configuration. It also details the water supply needs for a population of 20,000, requiring annual bleaching powder for disinfection, and the annual cost of slaked lime and soda for treating water with specific impurities. Additionally, it defines residual chlorine and distinguishes between free and combined chlorine.

Tutorial 8

1. A water treatment plant is being designed to process 60,000 m3/day of water. Jar
testing and pilot-plant analysis indicate that an alum dosage of 40 mg/L with
flocculation at a Gt value of 4 x 104 produces optimal results at the expected
water temperature of 15oC. Determina:
a. Monthly alum requirement
b. The flocculation basin dimensions if three cross-flow horizontal paddles are
to be used. The flocculator should be maximum of 12 m wide and 5 m deep.
c. Power requirement
d. Paddle configuration

2. Water is being supplied to a population of 20,000 at a per capita demand of 150

litres per day. For disinfection bleaching powder is being used which contains
30% of available chlorine. Determine the annual requirement of bleaching
powder if 0.3 ppm dose is required for disinfection.

3. Calculate the annual cost of slaked lime and soda for treating 60,000 litres of
water per day, if the water contains the following impurities:
CaCO3 = 280 ppm Ma(HCO3)2 = 100 ppm
NaCl = 30 ppm CaSO4 = 100 ppm
MgCl2 = 140 ppm MgSO4 = 80 ppm
Fe2O3 = 50 ppm SiO2 = 40 ppm

4. What is residual chlorine?

5. What is free and combined chlorine?
