“Gear-up” Activity
Recall / review all the rules that you have to follow at home, at the church, in the community and in
Pangasinan State University.
Consider the following study questions after recalling the rules:
● Among the rules (i.e. rules at home, in the community, at PSU), which rule do you find
constricting?
● What do you think are the reasons behind these rules?
● What would your home be without these rules? Your community? PSU?
Answers:
I find that the rule at home constrains me because it only allows me to use my screen for two
hours a day. I often use my devices for schoolwork and relaxation.
The reason behind this rule is to make sure I stay healthy, avoid too much screen time, and
focus on other important activities like studying and spending time with family.
Without the rules, your home would feel chaotic. The community would be a hazardous
place since people won't respect traffic laws, not to mention others, for example, personal
safety. In PSU, studying would be very hard due to nobody respecting rules for example
time and teachers.

Respond to the following guide questions as a Written Homework to be submitted in your MS
Teams. Follow the given format below.
● “Not all rules are moral rules or standard”. Give three differences between moral standards
and non-moral standards.
● Enumerate 5 examples of moral standards and 5 examples of non-moral standards.
● Recall a past experience that you consider as a moral dilemma. Briefly explain why it is a
moral dilemma and not just any other dilemmas.

Moral versus Non-Moral Standards
1. “Not all rules are moral rules or standard”. Give three differences between moral standards and
non-moral standards.
Moral standards entail right and wrong whereas, non-moral standards contain preferences or
rules irrelevant to morality.
Moral standards are universal and pertain to all human beings whereas, non-moral standards can
change with different culture or personal preference
Breaching a moral standard often hurts others, although in the case of the violation of a non-
moral standard, it probably hurts no one at all--for example, no dress code is followed.
2. Enumerate 5 examples of moral standards and 5 examples of non-moral standards.
Moral Standards: Non-Moral Standards:
1. Do not lie to others. 1. Don’t chew gum in class.
2. Help those in need. 2. Keep your room clean.
3. Treat everyone with respect. 3. Speak only when called in class.

Once, I saw my friend copying answers during an exam. I was torn between telling the teacher,
which was the honest thing to do, or staying quiet to protect my friend. This was a moral dilemma
because both options had consequences that made it hard to choose the "right" one.

Advance Reading:
Before the discussion on Topic 5, you should read in advance “Freedom” by Gallinero uploaded in
your MS Teams. Consider the following guide questions after reading:
● Why is it that only human can be ethical? How about the animals?
● Why is freedom regarded as the foundation of ethics?
Answers:
Only humans can be ethical since they can reason, make choices, and think about
right and wrong. Animals only act on instinct and do not understand morality like
human beings.
Freedom constitutes the basis of ethics because there can be no ethical choice, if we
do not exercise freedom to decide. If it were not for freedom, we would simply obey
merely because we are compelled rather than because we believe them.
