Module 6: Artificial Intelligence for Public Interest

Topic 1: Defining Public Interest AI

- There's no single, universal definition of public interest
- Public interest is about “those outcomes best serving the long-term survival and
well-being of a community construed as a public”. Only in a process of talking
and negotiation citizens can find out what’s best for everyone as a group - so
the public interest. (not include private interest which is personal profits)
“Envisioning Communities: A Participatory Approach Towards AI for Social Good”
 Approaches to public interest that focus on participation.
 the affected communities that must decide if the AI system works for their
social
 good. They propose a capabilities approach that suggests a standard of social
good based on an understanding of the kinds of lives individuals have reason to
value, how the distribution of resources may create opportunities for them to
realise these lives, and how AI projects can create fertile conditions for these
opportunities to be secured. AI then becomes a tool to shift power to
individuals and groups in situations of disadvantage.
DAIR : question of how the process of AI can become thoughtful and deliberative
=> include diverse perspectives and deliberate processes, it can be beneficial.
The organisationAlgorithmic Justice League aims towards fair and accountable AI
systems.
=> people need to have agency and control over how they interact with the system,
which in turn needs transparency about how and where these systems are
deployed.
Topic 2: Applications and Contexts of Public Interest AI
AI systems have to meet in order to meet public interest standards, such as a
participatory design, equity and robust technical safeguards.
