Tutorial 04

The document contains exercises related to complex analysis, focusing on the classification of singularities, properties of entire functions, and holomorphic functions in specific domains. It includes tasks such as finding functions with given bounds, proving the removable nature of singularities, and extending functions across symmetric domains. The exercises emphasize the application of theorems and properties of holomorphic functions.

MA3211S Tutorial 4

Exercise 1. Classify the singularities of the following functions:

z sin2 z 1 1
(a) (b) (c) exp( ) (d) z cos ·
sin z z4 z z
Exercise 2. Find all entire functions f (z) such that |f (z)| ≤ 2|x| + 1 for all
z = x + iy ∈ C.

Exercise 3. Show that for every integer n there is a holomorphic function f on

C \ R− such that f (z)n = z.

Exercise 4. Let Ω be the unbounded domain Ω = {z = x + iy, x > 0, |y| < x}.
Let f be a holomorphic function in Ω which is continuous in Ω.√Assume that
|f (z)| ≤ 1 for z in the boundary of Ω. Assume also that |f (z)| ≤ e |z| for z ∈ Ω.
Show that |f (z)| ≤ 1 for all z ∈ Ω.

Exercise 5. Let f (z) be a holomorphic function in D∗ (0, 1) = D(0, 1) \ {0} with

a singularity at 0. Assume that Ref (z) > 0 for all z ∈ D∗ (0, 1). Show that 0 is
removable.

Exercise 6. Let f (z) be a holomorphic function in D∗ (0, 1) with a non-removable

singularity at 0. So that 0 is an essential singularity for ef (z) .

Exercise 7. Let Ω be a domain in C which is symmetric with respect to the real

line R. Denote by Ω+ and Ω− the intersections of Ω with the upper and lower
open half-planes, respectively. Let L denote the intersection Ω ∩ R (you can draw
a picture). Let f be a function which is holomorphic on Ω+ and continuous on
Ω+ ∪ L. Assume that f (z) ∈ R for z ∈ L. We extend f to Ω by setting

f (z) = f (z) for z ∈ Ω− or equivalently z ∈ Ω+ .

(a) Show that f is continuous on Ω.

(b) Show that f is holomorphic on Ω− .

(c) Show that f is holomorphic on Ω. You can use Morera’s theorem.

(d) Let h be a holomorphic function on Ω+ such that h(z) tends to 0 when z

tends to any point in L. Show that h is identically zero.
