made available online. You must therefore access the quiz online and complete it
online where the quiz has been created.

• It is not advisable to use a cell phone to complete the quiz. Please use a desktop
computer, tablet or laptop when completing the quiz. Students who use a cell
phone find it difficult to navigate the Online Assessment tool on the small
screen and often struggle to navigate between questions and successfully
complete the quizzes. In addition, cell phones are more vulnerable to dropped
internet connections than other devices. If at all possible, please do not use a
cell phone for this assessment type.

• For written assessments, please note the due date by which the assessment
must be submitted. Ensure that you follow the guidelines given by your lecturer to
complete the assessment. Click on the submission button on the relevant
assessment shell on myModules. You will then be able to upload your written
assessment on the myModules site of the modules that you are registered for.
Before you finalise the upload, double check that you have selected the correct
file for upload. Remember, no marks can be allocated for incorrectly submitted
assessments.

2.4 Assignment

2.4.1 Project title

Design of reinforced concrete elements.
2.4.2 Graduate attribute (GA) assessed
Graduate Attribute number: 03

Summary of GA: Engineering Design:

Purpose: Perform procedural and non-procedural design of broadly defined

components, systems, works, products or processes to meet desired needs
normal within applicable standards, codes of practice and legislation

2.4.3 Project Brief

In this project, you are required to design the reinforced concrete structural elements
of a frame structure of a flat /apartment. The building is a 3-storey structure, and the
layout plan is shown in Figure 1 below.

a) Label the beams and columns appropriately to suit your design.

b) Design the reinforced concrete slab, reinforced concrete beams, reinforced

concrete columns and reinforced concrete foundation. For beams, columns
and foundation design as explained in the bullets below.
Some of the basic dimensions and material properties are given.

• For the beam design, identify the most critical beam of each floor and
design the most critical beam on each floor.
• Design the columns associated with the critical beams Identified above.

• Design the foundation associated to be the columns designs

Model of the reinforced concrete structure

Plan dimensions

Span lengths = Is as shown in the layout plan

Column heights:
From foundation to first-floor slab (H1) = 4000 mm

From first floor to second floor and second floor to third floor (H2) = 3200 mm

Material properties
Characteristic cube strength of concrete, fcu = 30
MPa Yield strength of steel in tension fy = 450 MPa
Yield strength of steel in shear fvy = 250 MPa
Concrete unit weight 24 kN/m3
Concrete cover to slabs, beams and column elements is 25 mm (moderate
exposure) Concrete cover to foundation = 50 mm

SCOPE OF PROJECT

The scope of the work Is therefore to perform a structural design of the provided
structural frame of reinforced concrete building using:

• Relevant South African codes and standard

• Basic theories and knowledge you gained through this module

You are expected to submit a design report which includes your calculation,
reinforcement detail drawing together with your interpretation and summary of the
results. You can develop your own formulas in an excel spreadsheet and confirm
your calculation with other available software (license to Prokon software will be
available to you). Then, discuss the pros and cons of the limit of using hand
calculation, excel-spreadsheet, and other available software (if available).

DELIVERABLES

The main deliverable in this project is design calculations and report. Your calculation
should indicate the reasonable assumptions you have made (if any). Please make
sure you have made all necessary limit checks such as minimum and maximum
amount and spacing of reinforcement, shear capacity of concrete and so on.

Finally, show the reinforcement detailed drawing in their respective structural elements.
