Replicates

Replicates are identical copies of


tests done in an experiment.
They are all done at the same
time, so they occur in the same
conditions.
The number of replicates used is
called the sample size.
Sample size
This refers to the number
of replicates you do in an
experiment.
It does not refer to
repetition.
Why do we do replicates?
All experiments have variation in
their results.
To see how much variation there is
we use replicates.
Each replicate should be identical, so
the range of results shows us how
reliable the results are.
I am testing the effect of acid concentration
on the reactivity of the acid.
I test five different concentrations of acid.
I test each concentration three times.

What is the sample size?

I am testing the effect of vitamin
tablets on the growth of guinea pigs.
I test the effects of six different
vitamin tablets. I test them on eight
different guinea pigs.
