kilometers per hour, decimating homes, flooding low-lying areas, destroying agriculture, and

The island province of Catanduanes was the first to bear the wrath of the storm.
Communication lines and power were all cut off, and 90 percent of infrastructure was either
damaged or destroyed. The neighboring provinces such as Albay and Camarines Sur also
suffered catastrophic damage, with lava flows from the Mayon volcano mixing with intense
rainfall, triggering deadly landslides that buried several villages under mud and soil.

Authorities have reported that at least 25 or so people have died, though the numbers are
expected to rise as search-and-rescue operations continue. As the typhoon continues to
show its force, over 400,000 residents were forced to evacuate, seeking shelter in schools
and government facilities amid strict COVID-19 protocols.

As to how this all started, tropical depressions and typhoons form over warm ocean waters.
As winds from two separate regions collide, air is forced up; it cools up and condenses into
clouds, releasing heat that further fuels the system. It first starts as a tropical depression,
which turns into a tropical storm, severe tropical storm, typhoon, and eventually a super
typhoon.
