The Winning Speech

Maria was a shy Grade 6 pupil who rarely spoke in front of a crowd. One day, her teacher announced
a speech competition about protecting the environment. At first, Maria felt nervous. She doubted herself and
thought she would embarrass herself if she joined. However, her teacher encouraged her to try. Her parents
also helped her practice every evening.
As the competition day approached, Maria worked hard. She researched facts, wrote her speech, and
practiced speaking in front of a mirror. Although she was still nervous, she became more confident each day.
Finally, the day of the competition arrived. When Maria stepped onto the stage, her hands trembled. She took
a deep breath and began speaking. To her surprise, the audience listened attentively and applauded her
speech.
At the end of the program, the judges announced the winners. Maria was shocked when she heard
her name called as the champion. She proudly received her trophy and thanked everyone who believed in
her. From that day on, Maria learned that courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to try despite
being afraid.
