Vocabulary learning has recently assumed an important role in linguistic
research. Over recent years there has been a revival of interest in the role
of vocabulary in language teaching, and it is now widely accepted that
activities that aim at the learning and use of vocabulary have a central part
to play in any language syllabus, whether for general or for specific
purposes. The present study considers some theoretical and practical issues
involved when learning and teaching foreign language vocabulary. It also
deals with the difficulties which encounter the students in determining the
part of speech of a lexical item which stem from their having problems
differentiating between various parts of speech.
The study, however, falls into five chapters.
Chapter One introduces the preliminary statements put forward for the
study, such as the problem it tackles, the objectives it purports to achieve,
the significance it shows, the hypothesis it formulates, and the procedures it
follows to conduct its experiment.
Chapter Two commences with some aspects concerning language
vocabulary, such as the complex nature of vocabulary, its relation to
context, its acquisition, learning and teaching, and Vocabulary learning
strategies.
Chapter Three concentrates on topics like vocabulary and grammar,
the teaching of implicit and explicit grammar, parts of speech.
Chapter Four describes the field procedure carried out to investigate
the present situation of learning vocabulary as affected by English parts of
speech and to gauge the learner’s level of achievement through a test. It
also offers an analysis of the test data, and discussion of the findings.
Chapter Five offers some suggestions and recommendations to help
improve the present situation.
