GRADE 1 MATH
12-Week Lesson Plan
3 sessions per week · 20–30 minutes per session
Follows a Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract teaching approach
How to Use This Plan
• Each week has 3 sessions; adjust to 2 longer sessions if that fits your schedule better.
• Always start with the Warm-Up — it reviews the previous session and takes only about 5 minutes.
• Move through Concrete (objects) → Pictorial (drawings) → Abstract (numbers only) — don't rush to worksheets before the
child has handled real objects.
• If a topic isn't sticking, repeat that session's activity again before moving on — this plan is a guide, not a strict deadline.
• End each week with quick informal praise/feedback — stickers or a simple progress chart work well for this age.
WEEK 1: Number Sense 0–20
Goal: Confidently count, read, write, and understand quantities from 0 to 20.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Count aloud together, Match counters to numeral cards 0–10;

Teaching tip: Use fingers, counters, or small toys for every number — first graders need to physically touch quantities before
numerals mean anything.
WEEK 2: Number Sense 20–100 & Counting
Goal: Extend counting fluently to 100; recognize patterns in the number sequence.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Hundred chart: find and Count in groups of 10 using Fill missing numbers 1–50

Teaching tip: Use a hundred chart daily — point and count together, and highlight patterns (e.g., every row starts a new ten).
WEEK 3: Skip Counting
Goal: Skip count fluently by 2s, 5s, and 10s as a foundation for multiplication and grouping.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Pair up objects (shoes, socks) and count

Teaching tip: Turn skip counting into a song or clapping rhythm — repetition through music makes it stick far faster than silent
drills.
WEEK 4: Place Value (Tens & Ones)
Goal: Understand that two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Bundle 10 straws into 1 Build 2-digit numbers using ten-bundles Draw tens/ones blocks for
1 Tens and ones intro

3 Practice & games Place value bingo or matching game Mixed place value workshe
flashcards
Teaching tip: Base-ten blocks or bundled straws are essential here — this concept must be built physically before it's written
abstractly, since it underlies all later addition/subtraction.
WEEK 5: Addition Within 20
Goal: Move from concrete counting to mental addition strategies within 20.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Count two small groups of Draw and solve 5 addition
1 Addition with objects Use counters to solve addition within 10
toys together problems
Use ten-frames for addition crossing 10

3 Doubles/near-doubles work
doubles (3+3, 4+4) (4+5)
Teaching tip: Follow Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract: objects first, then drawings/dots, only then bare number sentences. Don't
skip a stage even if the child seems to "get it" quickly.
WEEK 6: Subtraction Within 20 & Fact Families
Goal: Understand subtraction as "taking away" and connect it to addition through fact families.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Subtraction with Take-away story: "you had Counters: physically remove and count Simple subtraction worksh

3 Fact families Fact family worksheet
the family (e.g., 4,5,9) per set of numbers)
Teaching tip: Always relate subtraction back to a matching addition fact (5+3=8 and 8-3=5) — this builds number relationships
instead of two separate skills.
WEEK 7: Comparing Numbers & Word Problems
Goal: Compare quantities using greater than/less than/equal to, and solve simple real-life word problems.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Greater than / less Compare two groups of Compare numbers using >,

problems
Teaching tip: Use the "alligator mouth" trick for > and < — the alligator always eats the bigger number. For word problems, use
the child's favorite characters/toys to keep it engaging.
WEEK 8: Shapes (Geometry)
Goal: Identify and describe common 2D and 3D shapes by their properties.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Name shapes you can see Trace and sort circle, square, triangle,
1 2D shapes Shape tracing & naming w

3 Sorting & properties Sort shapes by number of sides/corners Shape sorting worksheet
shapes together
Teaching tip: Go on a "shape hunt" around the house or yard — connecting shapes to real objects (a ball = sphere, a door =
rectangle) makes the concept concrete.
WEEK 9: Measurement
Goal: Compare and measure length and weight using non-standard units.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Line up 3 objects, guess Measure objects using paperclips or
1 Comparing length Length comparison worksh

Teaching tip: Let the child use their own body or toys as measuring tools (hand spans, paperclips) — this builds intuition before
introducing rulers later.
WEEK 10: Time
Goal: Read a clock to the hour and half-hour; connect time to daily routine.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Identify hour hand vs Set a toy clock to different "o'clock" Draw hands on clock faces
1 Clock parts & hour

3 Mixed time worksheet
review morning/afternoon/night times
Teaching tip: Use a toy or paper clock the child can move by hand, and tie every time lesson back to their real schedule ("what
do you do at 8 o'clock?").
WEEK 11: Money
Goal: Identify common coins and count small combinations of money.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Match coin name to coin picture and
1 Identifying coins Sort coins by size/color Coin identification worksh

3 Review Quick coin value quiz Mixed coin counting game Money review worksheet
Teaching tip: Use real coins or play money and set up a simple pretend "shop" — role play makes counting money far more
engaging than worksheets alone.
WEEK 12: Data & Graphs + Final Review
Goal: Read and create simple graphs; consolidate the full term's math skills.
Session Focus Warm-Up (5 min) Main Activity (10-15 min) Practice / Take-Home (5
Tally marks & picture Tally a small survey (e.g.,
1 Turn tally data into a simple picture graph Reading a picture graph wo
graphs favorite fruit)
Review tally-to-graph Build and read a simple bar graph
2 Bar graphs Bar graph worksheet
from yesterday together
Rapid-fire review quiz Play a board-game style review covering Cumulative review worksh
3 Full term review
(one question per topic) all 12 weeks mini assessment
Teaching tip: Build a graph from data about the child's own life (favorite colors, toys, snacks) — personal data keeps interest
high while reviewing every core skill from the term.
