INTRODUCTION
Social media has become a central part of daily life and a powerful force shaping modern
consumer markets. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X (Twitter),
and Snapchat are no longer used only for communication and entertainment; they have
evolved into influential spaces where consumers discover brands, evaluate products, compare
alternatives, and share opinions. As access to smartphones and internet connectivity
increases, consumers spend significant time engaging with content that includes
advertisements, influencer endorsements, peer reviews, and brand-generated posts. This shift
has transformed the traditional buying process and created new patterns of consumer
behavior that organizations must understand to remain competitive.
From a marketing perspective, social media functions as an interactive channel that allows
two-way communication between consumers and businesses. Unlike traditional media, where
information flows in one direction, social media enables users to react, comment, share, and
create content. This interactivity increases the speed at which information spreads and
strengthens the role of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM). Consumers often rely on online
reviews, ratings, comments, and recommendations from friends or influencers before making
purchase decisions. As a result, buying behavior is increasingly shaped by social proof,
trends, perceived credibility of content creators, and continuous exposure to digital
promotions.
Consumer buying behavior refers to the process through which individuals identify needs,
search for information, evaluate available options, decide to purchase, and respond after
purchasing. Social media can influence each stage of this process. For example, targeted
advertisements and trending content can stimulate need recognition; product reviews and
unboxing videos can support information search; comparison posts and influencer opinions
can impact evaluation; limited-time deals and personalized offers can encourage purchase
decisions; and post-purchase feedback shared online can influence future buyers. Therefore,
understanding how social media usage affects buying behavior is important for both
academic research and practical business strategy.
In recent years, the growth of influencer marketing and algorithm-driven content has
intensified the influence of social media on consumption patterns. Influencers—ranging from
celebrities to micro-influencers—often shape consumer attitudes by presenting products in a
relatable and persuasive manner. In addition, social media algorithms repeatedly expose users
to certain brands and categories based on their interests, online activity, and engagement.
This repeated exposure can increase brand awareness, strengthen brand recall, and affect
consumer preferences over time. At the same time, social media may also encourage
impulsive buying due to constant promotions, social comparison, and fear of missing out
(FOMO), especially among young consumers.
Despite its widespread impact, the relationship between social media usage and consumer
buying behavior can vary depending on factors such as age, income level, product category,
trust in online information, and the amount of time spent on platforms. Some consumers may
be highly influenced by advertisements and influencer recommendations, while others may
use social media mainly for entertainment and remain less affected in purchasing decisions.
These differences make it necessary to examine social media usage in a structured way using
research methods that can measure consumer responses, identify patterns, and test
relationships between variables.
This research focuses on studying the impact of social media usage on consumer buying
behavior by analyzing how consumers interact with social platforms and how that interaction
affects their purchase decisions. The study is relevant because businesses increasingly
allocate marketing budgets to social media campaigns and depend on online engagement to
drive sales. By investigating this topic, the research aims to provide insights into how social
media influences consumer decision-making and how organizations can use social media
strategically to attract, inform, and retain customers.
