Do you know that Taylor Swift moved to Nashville at 14 to start her music career without parental control?

This is just an example among millions of examples of successful people becoming independent from a young
age. So, how can parents help their kids become independent? Welcome everyone to my presentation. I'm
Nguyen The Minh, a student from class 7A1 of Nguyen Dang Dao Lower Secondary School, and today I'm
proud to stand here to express my opinion about this topic. First and foremost, I want to wish everyone good
health and abundant happiness. Now, without further delay, let's dive into the heart of the problem
Before discussing how parents can help their kids become independent, I will take a moment to reflect on the
benefits. Firstly, it gives children space for discovery. Parents are one of the most important people of the old
generations, and they tend to be old-fashioned. Kids with high curiosity must have much free space for
discovery, and inventors like Thomas Alva Edison started to make inventions at a very young age. Even though
he didn't excel in school subjects, his mother let him experience learning instead of traditional schooling. Marie
Curie, the woman who received 2 Nobel Prizes in science, was supported by her father’s laboratory to conduct
her early independent science experiments.
Secondly, it can help kids improve self-confidence. Kids love the rewarding feeling after doing something
great. When they become independent, they feel like adults, and that gives them self-confidence. According to
the Pew Research Center, 67% of teens mentioned that parental autonomy improved their self-confidence.
Educational research suggests that 70% of students who manage their schedules feel more independent and
mature.
Thirdly, it helps children to learn social skills and life skills. Nowadays, kids are too focused on screens,
creating a lack of social life skills. Some of my friends, for example, do not know how to tie their shoes or cook
a simple meal. Learning to be independent is a great solution for this, which encourages the development of
skills as well as making smarter decisions. There is a 60% greater knowledge readiness among those who made
independent decisions in high school.
In addition, it also teaches kids about responsibility. Studies have shown that 55% of students given home
responsibilities are more resilient. Former German Prime Minister Angela Merkel was inspired by her father to
take responsibility when making independent choices in childhood.
So, how can parents develop an independent child? Firstly, they should allow them to make early decisions.
Parents can let their children make simple choices in their day, like the clothes they wear or the food they eat.
Even though they must take responsibility for their decisions, the cost of mistakes will become valuable
experiences for them to make smarter decisions in the future.
Secondly, participating in housework is also important. Simple tasks like brushing teeth and washing faces, as
well as doing the dishes and cleaning the floor, should be done by kids themselves. These chores provide kids
with essential skills for future life.
Encouraging curiosity in children fosters a sense of exploration and learning. Allowing them to observe and
inquire about their surroundings, such as a beehive, helps them to understand the natural world and the
importance of safety and respect for wildlife. Even if there are moments of concern, guiding them through
dangerous situations with proper education can turn potential risks into valuable learning experiences.
In conclusion, fostering self-discovery and curiosity in children is vital for their growth. Allowing them to
explore safely teaches them to appreciate nature while developing a sense of responsibility and respect.
