MA3204: PDE: Assignment-I

Dr. Rajat Tripathi

February 25, 2025

1. Obtain the partial differential equation from the following: u = f (x − at) + g(x + at), where f and
g are arbitrary functions.

2. Form the partial differential equation from the relation ϕ(xy + z 2 , x + y + z) = 0, where ϕ is an
arbitrary function, relating independent variables x, y with dependent variable z.

3. Find the PDE of the set of all right circular cones whose axes coincide with z-axis.

4. Form a PDE by eliminating the arbitrary function f from the equation: z = y 2 + 2f ( x1 + logy).
∂z ∂z
5. Find the general solution of the partial differential equation: (x + y 2 ) ∂x + y ∂y = z + x2 .
∂z ∂z
6. Find the solution of the partial differential equation (mz − ny) ∂x + (nx − lz) ∂y = ly − mx.
∂z ∂z
7. Find the general solution of the PDE: x(x + y) ∂x − y(x + y) ∂y + (x − y)(2x + 2y + z) = 0.

8. Solve the PDE: p2 + q 2 + (p − x2 )(q − y2 ) − z = 0, with Cauchy data prescribed on X-axis by z(x, 0) = 0.

9. Solve the PDE: 2p2 x + qy − z = 0, with Cauchy data z(x, 1) = − x2 .

10. Show that all the characteristic curves of the partial differential equation (2x + z)zx + (2y + z)zy = z
through the poi nt (1, 1) are given by the same straight line: x − y = 0.

11. Find the general integral of the equation (2x − y)y 2 zx + 8(y − 2x)x2 zy = 2(4x2 + y 2 )z and deduce
1
the solution of Cauchy problem when z(x, 0) = 2x on a portion of x− axis.

12. Show that the result of elimination of an arbitrary function h(ϕ, ψ) of two arguments from the relation
h(ϕ(x, y, z).ψ(x, y, z)) = 0, where ϕ and psi are two known functions, is a quasilinear PDE.
