Introduction
PDF Expert is an advanced PDF viewer, which provides set of professional functions to
overcome the limitations of built-in iPad PDF viewer. With PDF Expert you can view and
store PDF files downloaded from Internet or web storages, received by email or transferred
via iTunes. You can use PDF Expert for filling forms and make calculations, adding notes,
making markups and bookmarks, highlight text and underline key words in your files, also
you can view your document structure and easily move from one chapter of the document
to another. After you’ve reviewed and modified your document, you can email or upload it
to web storage, so that your recipients could review your markups, annotations and
highlighting.

PDF Expert comes in handy when you want to:

• View large PDFs


• View password protected PDFs
• Navigate through embedded PDF’s bookmarks and document’s structure
• Search through PDF
• Fill in form or application
• Make bill calculations
• Make notes

Copying files to PDF Expert

USB file transfer using iTunes File Sharing


PDF Expert supports iTunes USB File Sharing. To transfer files, connect the iPad to
computer via USB, open iTunes and click on device name in the left column. Afterwards,
click on the Apps tab and scroll it to the very bottom.

You can Drag & Drop files into PDF Expert document list or click “Add” button to use file
selection dialog.

Connecting PDF Expert as a shared network drive


PDF Expert relies on a Wi-Fi network connection of any type to copy files between iPad and
a computer.

PDF Expert uses WebDAV protocol to share its data with other computers via Wi-Fi
Network. Most popular operating systems and many programs have the ability to mount
WebDAV resource as a network drive.

You need to know device IP address as well as login and password to access your device.
Login and password are optional and can be configured on “Settings” tab inside PDF
Expert. You will be able to see your iPad’s IP address near Wi-Fi drive icon and in the left
bottom corner . You can also access to help about connecting PDF
Expert to computer as Wi-Fi drive.

For quick uploading/downloading files, you may also connect to PDF Expert with any
modern web browser. Just type full URL like [Link] into address bar (replace
[Link] with IP address of your iPad ).

Connecting PDF Expert to Windows XP


1 Open the “Start” menu and select “My Network
Places”.
2 At the “Network Tasks” panel (you can find it on
the left part of the window) click “Add a Network
Place”. “Network Place Wizard” will be launched.
3 Click “Next” at the “Add Network Place Wizard”
welcome screen.
4 Select “Choose another network location” and
then click “Next”.
5 Type “[Link] and PDF Expert IP address and port.
This information is displayed on top of the
“Network” tab on your iPad.
6 Enter the name for this new connection or leave a default one.
7 Press “Finish”. Please ensure that “Open this network place when I click Finish” is
checked.
8 If you enabled password protection inside PDF Expert , you will be prompted to enter your
username and password. Make sure you are entering username and password which are
set in PDF Expert “Settings” tab. Also, please note that Windows XP may ask you to enter
the password several times.
9 As a result you should get PDF Expert network drive mounted and ready to use:

To reconnect to PDF Expert in the future, first make sure that PDF Expert is running. Open
the “Start” menu and click “My Network Places”. Find the network drive under Network
Locations and double-click it.

Connecting PDF Expert to Windows Vista/ Windows 7


1 Open “Start” menu and select “Computer”
2 Click “Map network drive” on the toolbar on top of the
Computer window.
3 Choose a drive letter in the drop-down menu.
4 Type “[Link] and PDF Expert IP address. This
information is displayed on top of the “Network” tab
inside PDF Expert. Make sure the “Reconnect at login”
box is unchecked.
5 If you enabled password protection inside PDF Expert,
you will be prompted to enter your username and password. Make sure you are entering
username and password which are set in PDF Expert ”Settings” tab. Also, please note that
Windows Vista/Windows 7 may ask you to enter the password several times.
6 As a result you should get PDF Expert network drive mounted and ready to use:

To reconnect to PDF Expert in the future, first make sure that PDF Expert is running. Open
the “Start” menu and click “Computer”. Find the network drive under Network Locations
and double-click it.

Enabling or changing your username and password for PDF Expert :


1 Open the “Start” menu and select “Computer”.
2 Find the PDF Expert network drive under Network Locations.
3 Right click on the PDF Expert network drive and select Disconnect.
4 Set up the drive again as described above.

Connecting PDF Expert to Mac OS X 10.4 or later


1 Click on the Finder icon
2 Select the “Connect to Server...” item in the Go menu. You can use Command+K shortcut
as well.

3 Type “http:// “ and PDF Expert server's IP address. This information is also displayed on the
“Network” tab inside PDF Expert .
4 Press “Connect” button. You can also add the server to “Favorite Servers” list.
If you enabled password protection at PDF Expert, you will be prompted to enter your
username and password. Make sure that you are entering username and password which
are set in PDF Expert “Settings“ tab.

5 As a result you should get Shared Disk mounted on your Mac:

You can also enable “Connected servers” setting at Finder “Preferences”→ ”General”
to show it on the Desktop.

Using Readdle Storage to copy files from your computer to the iPad
Readdle Storage is great when you need to upload some files from any computer to your
device. To upload files, follow these steps:

1 As a PDF Expert buyer, you are eligible to get free lifetime Readdle Storage account at
[Link] Just choose the plan called “Free” when
registering. This account will be used to store your documents securely.
2 After creating the account, go to Network tab inside PDF Expert, tap Add button, then tap
Readdle Storage label and enter your login and password for Readdle Storage account.
PDF Expert will catch your account and become able to get files stored online.
3 To upload files online, use any modern web browser on your computer. Navigate to
[Link] and log into Readdle Storage. You will see uploading
interface, which is fast and easy to use.
4 After you uploaded your files online, they become accessible via Network tab inside PDF
Expert. Tapping on any of them will save the file locally to the device and open it for
reading.

Copying files from MobileMeiDisk to iPad


For people who use MobileMeiDisk to store their files online, PDF Expert provides quick
and handy access to the documents directly from their devices. Also, you can use iDisk to
transfer files from the desktop computer or laptop to the iPad.

1 After creating the MobileMe account, go to “Network“ tab inside PDF Expert , tap
MobileMeiDisk label and provide the application with your login and password for
MobileMe account. PDF Expert will catch your account and become able to get files that
you store online.

After you uploaded your files online, they become accessible via “Network“ tab inside PDF
Expert. Tapping on any of them will save the file locally to the device and opens it for
reading.

Copying files from Dropbox


For people who use Dropbox to store their files online, PDF Expert provides quick and
handy access to the documents directly from their devices. Also, you can use Dropbox to
transfer files from the desktop computer or laptop to the iPad.

1 After creating the Dropbox account, go to “Network“ tab inside PDF Expert , tap Dropbox
label and provide the application with your login and password for Dropbox account. PDF
Expert will catch your account and become able to get files that you store online.

2 After you uploaded your files online, they become accessible via “Network“ tab inside PDF
Expert. Tapping on any of them will save the file locally to the device and opens it for
reading.

Copying files from Google docs


For people who use Google Docs to store their files online, PDF Expert provides quick and
handy access to the documents directly from their devices. Also, you can use Dropbox to
transfer files from the desktop computer or laptop to the iPad.

1 After creating the Google Docs account, go to “Network“ tab inside PDF Expert , tap
Google Docs label and provide the application with your login and password for Google
Docs account. PDF Expert will catch your account and become able to get files that you
store online.

2 After you uploaded your files online, they become accessible via “Network“ tab inside PDF
Expert. Tapping on any of them will save the file locally to the device and opens it for
reading.

Copying files from DAV supported web storage to iPad


If you use popular web storage services to make documents available from anywhere, PDF
Expert provides handy access to your files directly from the iPad.

1 Go to Network tab inside PDF Expert , tap “Add” → ”Other WebDAV Server” label and
provide the application with your login, password, and your service WebDAV URL. For
instance, [Link] users will need to type [Link]
2 Once you added online storages, they become accessible via Network tab inside PDF
Expert. Tapping on any of them will show the content stored online. To save the file locally
to the device, tap its name.

Copying files from FTP/SFTP server to iPad


You can connect PDF Expert to any FTP/SFTP server to access and manage files stored
online.

1 Go to “Network“ tab inside PDF Expert , tap “Add” → ”FTP Server” (or SFTP server)
label and provide the application with server URL and your login, password if needed.

2 Once you added FTP/SFTP online storage, it becomes accessible via “Network“ tab inside
PDF Expert. Tapping on the shortcut shows files stored online. To save the file locally to the
device, tap its name.

Online Storage Sync


Online Storage Synchronization is a new feature for Readdle Storage, iDisk, Dropbox that
allows two-way synchronization of certain folder between device and online storage. With
the feature you can set single or multiple folders to sync.
ATTENTION: Folder Sync use your Wi-Fi or 3G internet connection. Large folder syncing (like your entire Dropbox
account) may be very slow, that's why please choose one or several folders, that contain only required files.

To enable Network Synchronization:

1 Navigate to the folder on Readdle Storage, iDisk, Dropbox or other WebDAV resource.
2 Press “Sync” button on navigation bar,

3 Press “Sync This Folder” to add this folder to syncing queue.


4 After that a new “Sync” button will be added at the left bottom corner of the screen.
Pressing this button will start synchronization process for all folders.

Saving attachments to PDF Expert via Readdle Storage


PDF Expert relies on Readdle Storage web service to transfer attachments to your iPad.

Configuring PDF Expert to save attachments


1 Sign up for the “Free” plan on Readdle Storage. You can do this at
[Link] . You will receive an email with account login,
password and mail-in email address.
2 Go to “Network” tab, tap “Add” →“Readdle Storage”. Enter your Readdle Storage login
and password, then tap “Done”.
NOTE: To change these settings, tap “Edit” and then your Readdle Storage account label.

Transferring mail attachments into PDF Expert


1 Forward the email with attachment to mail-in address for your Readdle Storage account.
2 Your email will be processed within several minutes. PDF Expert creates “Readdle Mail In”
contact in your Address Book, so you do not need to type your mail-in address.
3 Navigate to Readdle Storage via “Network” tab.

4 Tap the file you need to save. PDF Expert will download and open file.
NOTE: Downloaded file can be opened later even without active Internet connection

Viewing and managing documents with PDF Expert


After you have transferred PDF documents to your iPad,
there are several possible scenarios of what you can do with
your documents:

• Read documents on the go


• Manage files stored inside PDF Expert
• Email files directly from PDF Expert

Reading documents on the go


You can view and manage all documents stored inside PDF
Expert via “Documents” tab inside the application.

To start reading a document, tap its name. After file is loaded, you will see document
reading screen.

In document reading mode:

To Do this
Zoom document Use standard two-finger iPhone pinch gesture
Search within the document
Tap . Search dialog pops up to enter keyword
Navigate via PDF
outline/bookmarks/annotations Tap to Navigate through outline structure or bookmarks, tap the
title you need to jump to.
Create bookmark Tap the screen to show controls. Then tap , enter bookmark name
and tap Save.
Email document
Tap and choose “Send by email” action. The dialog pops to edit
your message.
Fast scroll large documents
Use slider on the bottom of the screen.

Filling forms
With PDF Expert You can view and fill in PDF forms.

• Tap on active area to type in the text in form field.

NOTE: You can set up PDF Expert to highlight form fields with color in “Settings” > “PDF Viewer”

• Tap on the check box to make selection.

NOTE: The boxes required for filling are marked with red border.

• Tap on the box with triangle to show the dropdown list.

• To make calculations, just type in your data to the appropriate fields in the form and check
the result.

Annotating the document


With PDF Expert you can create different types of annotations for all kind of situations:

• Highlight – when you want to draw attention to the text;


• Underline – when you want to mark mistakes;
• Strikeout – when you want to show that this information is not needed or incorrect;
• Handwritten note – when you want to draw something or highlight the text on the PDF
files, that contains pictures with text;
• Sticky note – when you want to add a comment;
• Text note - when you want to add a comment with permanently visible content.
• Signature – when you want to approve a document.

To add Do this
Highlight Tap and hold your finger on the text to show text selection box. Drag markers to
select the text and select “Highlight” from the popup.

You can change the color of highlighting by tapping on the highlighted area
and selecting “Colors…”

Underline Tap and hold your finger on the text to show text selection box. Drag markers to
select the text and select “Underline” from the popup.

You can change the color for underline by tapping on the underlined area and
selecting “Colors…”
Strikeout Tap and hold your finger on the text to show text selection box. Drag markers to
select the text and select “Strikeout” from the popup.

You can change the color for strikeout by tapping on the selected area and
selecting “Colors…”
Handwritten note
Tap and draw on the text. You can change color and size of the
marker and also setup it’s transparency .

Sticky note Tap and hold at any place in the document to show a popup. Select “Note” to
add a new note. To modify or delete existing note just tap on the icon.
You are able to cut, copy or paste text to the note.
Text note Tap and hold on any place of the document to show the popup menu.
Select “Text” and enter the text you want to be placed.

To edit a text note, tap once and modify its


content, color, font size or delete it.
To move or scale the text note, just tap and
hold on it.
Signature
Tap to create a signature. Tap “Save” when you are done. To place a
signature to the file tap and hold on any place of the document till the popup
menu appears . Tap “Signature”, and if there is one made, it
will be placed.

To edit a signature, tap once and modify its


color, line width, opacity or delete it.

To move or scale the signature, just tap and hold on it.

Moving and deleting files


To manage files stored inside PDF Expert :

1 While you are viewing folder content on the


“Documents” tab inside PDF Expert, tap
“Edit” in top right corner.
2 Mark files and folders you want to manage
from your device and press appropriate
button in the bottom of the screen. You can
also create empty folder using top left button.

To Do this

Rename document Tap “Rename”, enter new name for the file or folder
Move file Tap “Move” and choose destination folder
Copy file Tap “Copy” and choose destination folder
Delete document Tap “Delete”.
Email without opening Tap “Email”. The dialog will pop up to edit message.
Compress file/folder Tap “Zip”. Compressed files will be placed into the same
folder.

NOTE: When you are deleting a folder, all its files and subfolders will be deleted as well.

Operating with particular file or folder


Tap “Edit ” and then tap to open file details.

• To open the file in another application, tap “Open In Other


App” and select the app from the list
• To rename the file, tap “Rename” and enter new name for
the file or folder

Sharing documents
With PDF Expert you can open your files in other application like Pages and Numbers, send
them by email and upload to iDisk, Dropbox and other popular file storages.

Opening documents in Pages and other apps


iPad allows applications to open files in other applications. The most notable example is
the ability to open attachments from the Mail application in PDF Expert .

To open a document in another application

1 Open document you want to transfer in PDF Expert


2 Tap “Actions” button the toolbar and select “Open In…” from the list.
NOTE: “Open In…” command actually creates copy of the file you have in PDF Expert and copies it to another
application. Thus if you want make any changes to that file be sure to copy it back to PDF Expert.

Emailing documents that are stored inside PDF Expert


1 To email document you are reading at the moment, tap “Actions” button and then “Send
by e-mail”. Mail dialog will pop up.
2 Enter your e-mail address to the “From” field. This is the address that your recipient will
reply to.
3 Enter your recipient e-mail address. You can also fill this field with any contact from your
address book.
4 Enter e-mail body text and tap Send.

Uploading documents from PDF Expert to iDisk or any other WebDAV storage
Files that are stored on iPad can be uploaded to MobileMe iDisk or other WebDAV storage
directly from PDF Expert .

To upload files/folders to online storage, follow the steps below

1 From the “Network” tab choose your online storage and open its contents. Tap “Edit” in
top right corner to open action menu
2 Tap “Upload” button.
3 Mark files and folders you want to store online. Then tap ”Upload” button to upload.
NOTE: File actions will not be shown for read-only storages.

Settings
Settings allow you to customize your application,
configure Wi-Fi network drive parameters, document
viewing, security and other preferences for PDF
Expert .

Passkey Lock
Passkey allows you to protect documents from being
viewed by other person. Once set, the application will ask the passkey on each launch.

NOTE: To set password for wireless access to PDF Expert , use Wi-Fi Network Drive section.

ATTENTION! There is no way to recover your files if you forget the passkey.

Wi-Fi Drive
Wi-Fi Drive almost turns PDF Expert into portable flash drive. The only difference is that you
need active Wi-Fi connection to transfer files from your computer to the iPad.

This feature is based on WebDAV protocol and is compatible with both Windows and Mac.
Enable Drive
• Turn Wi-Fi access to your files on or off.
Ask For Password
• Enable or disable password protection for Wi-Fi access to your files
Public Folder
• Enables public folder that can be accessed without password

NOTE: Password configured here is for Wi-Fi connections only. To protect your documents from being viewed directly on
the iPad, use Passkey Lock feature.

PDF Viewer
• That option allows you to:
• Enable or disable “Highlight links”, which gives you an
ability to recognize links in PDFs.
• Enable or disable “Highlight form fields” to visually
separate active fields from PDF background.
• Set the way you prefer to scroll pages, horizontally or
vertically.
• Make PDF Expert to zoom automatically to the page
width in landscape mode by checking “Page Width” in

“Lowest page zoom fits to” section. Other wise it will show the whole page in landscape
mode.

Auto-open
In this section, you can enable or disable immediate opening files in PDF Expert on startup
and after downloading them from the web.

Support
This section allows you to contact Readdle team in case you have any questions or
suggestions. In case you have some issue with the app, please enable Verbose logging,
then reproduce the problem and contact us via Support dialog. Diagnostic log will be sent
to us so that we could assist you faster.
