A computer network connects devices for data exchange and resource sharing. Key types include LANs for small areas and WANs for larger regions, with routers, switches, and modems as essential devices. IP addresses identify devices, while protocols like HTTP and TCP govern communication, and network security can be enhanced through strong passwords and secure practices.

Basics of Computer Networks

Study Notes

What Is a Network?
A computer network connects devices so they can exchange data and share resources such as files,
printers, and internet connections.

Types of Networks
A LAN covers a small area such as a school or home. A WAN covers larger geographical areas. The
Internet is the largest interconnected network.

Network Devices
Routers direct traffic between networks. Switches connect devices within a local network. Modems
help connect a local network to an internet service.

IP Addresses
An IP address identifies a device or network interface so data can be delivered to the correct
destination. IPv4 and IPv6 are common addressing systems.

Protocols
Protocols are agreed rules for communication. Examples include HTTP for web communication, DNS
for translating domain names, and TCP for reliable data transmission.

Network Security
Strong passwords, software updates, secure connections, and careful handling of unknown links can
help protect networks and devices.
