Introduction to Renewable Energy
Study Notes
Overview
Renewable energy comes from natural sources that are replenished over time. Common examples
include sunlight, wind, flowing water, biomass, and geothermal heat.
Solar Energy
Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. Solar power is useful in homes, schools, industries, and
large power plants.
Wind Energy
Wind turbines use moving air to turn blades connected to generators. Wind farms can produce
significant amounts of electricity.
Hydropower
Hydroelectric plants use moving or falling water to generate electricity. It is one of the oldest
large-scale renewable energy technologies.
Advantages
Renewable energy can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse-gas emissions, and
provide energy from locally available resources.
Challenges
Some renewable sources are intermittent. Solar power depends on sunlight and wind power depends
on wind conditions, so storage and reliable grids are important.
