MODULE 2 – WEEK 6 Reading
Peer Pressure
Peer pressure is a social phenomenon that occurs when individuals feel influenced or pressured
by their peers to conform to certain behaviors or attitudes. It is a common experience for
people of all ages, but it is particularly prevalent among teenagers and young adults.
Peer pressure can be both positive and negative. On the positive side, it can motivate
individuals to try new things, improve their skills, and achieve their goals. For example, a group
of friends might encourage each other to study hard and get good grades, or to train for a
marathon together.
On the negative side, peer pressure can lead to risky or harmful behaviors. For example, an
individual might feel pressured to use drugs or alcohol, or to engage in risky behaviors, in order
to fit in with a certain group of friends. Peer pressure can also cause individuals to act in ways
that go against their own values or beliefs.
It is important for individuals to be able to recognize and resist negative peer pressure. This can
be challenging, especially for young people who may feel a strong desire to be accepted by
their peers. However, there are some strategies that can help:
Know your own values and beliefs: It is easier to resist peer pressure if you have a strong
sense of your own values and beliefs. Take some time to think about what is important
to you and be clear about your boundaries.
Surround yourself with supportive friends : Choose friends who respect your values and
support your decisions, rather than trying to pressure you into doing things you are not
comfortable with.
Find alternative activities: If you feel pressured to participate in risky or harmful
behaviors, try finding alternative activities that you enjoy. This can help you avoid
situations where you might feel pressure to conform.
Be assertive: It is okay to say no to your peers. Practice assertive communication skills,
such as saying "I'm not interested" or "I don't feel comfortable with that."
Seek support: If you are struggling to cope with peer pressure, don't hesitate to seek
support from a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, or counselor.
