MEANING OF SECURITY; Security refers to the state of being free from danger, threat, harm,
or fear. It encompasses the protection of individuals, groups, institutions, or nations from both
physical and non-physical threats.

Role of police in security


[Link] Prevention. One of the foremost roles of the police in security is the prevention of
crime before it occurs. This involves:
[Link] duties — regular uniformed presence in communities to deter criminal activity
[Link] gathering — monitoring suspicious activities and known criminal networks
[Link] policing — building relationships with residents to identify and address security
threats early

by offering rescue operations and relief support.

Role of the civil defense


In Nigeria, the major civil defence agency is the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps
(NSCDC).

Civil defence protects important national infrastructure such as oil pipelines, power installations,
government facilities, and communication systems from vandalism and sabotage.
2. Maintenance of Internal Security
Civil defence assists in maintaining peace and public order by supporting other security
agencies in tackling insecurity and crime.
3. Disaster Management and Emergency Response
Civil defence responds to emergencies such as floods, fire outbreaks, building collapse, and
other disasters to protect lives and property.
4. Intelligence Gathering
The agency gathers and shares intelligence information to prevent crimes and security threats.
5. Protection of Lives and Property
Civil defence helps ensure the safety of citizens and protects public and private property from
destruction.
6. Combating Vandalism and Illegal Activities
The NSCDC combats pipeline vandalism, illegal oil bunkering, human trafficking, and other
economic crimes.
7. Community Security and Surveillance
Civil defence officers engage in community policing and surveillance to detect suspicious
activities and improve grassroots security.

7. Cooperating with Security Agencies
Citizens should cooperate with the police, army, and other agencies during investigations and
emergencies.
8. Avoiding Criminal Activities
Citizens should refrain from engaging in crimes such as theft, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and
terrorism.
9. Participating in Security Awareness
Citizens should educate themselves and others on safety measures and security
consciousness.
10. Encouraging Youth Against Crime
Parents and community members should guide young people away from criminal behavior and
violence.
