Timer’s Sample Script to Explain the Role

Note: This is just a guide for freshers in this role. You can change the words as you prefer.

“Thank you, General Evaluator, Dear Toastmaster of the Day, My dear Toastmasters and guests,

(You can change the following part to your own way, explaining the importance of time in public
speaking, and the importance of the timer role)

Imagine you're delivering a speech that has the potential to influence, inspire, or even change lives.
Now, consider this: no matter how compelling your words are, without effective time management,
your message might never reach its full impact. Therefore, time is very important in public speaking.
In Toastmasters we have the role of Timer, to help our emerging public speakers, to manage time.

First, we have the Round Robin Session. Each Speaker will get 20 seconds (This can be reduced to 15
if the agenda is too tight or participation is high, the timer can decide it) of speaking time and I will
ring a bell to indicate that.

In the prepared speech session, evaluators will get 2 minutes to present the project objectives. I will
indicate the red card at the end of 2 minutes.

(Only if there is an Icebreaker speech)

The icebreaker speeches will have 4 to 6 minutes. I will show the Green card at the 4th minute, the
Yellow card at the 5th minute, and the Red card at the end of the 6th minute and will keep it holding
until the speech ends.

(Else)

The prepared speeches will have 5 to 7 minutes. I will show the Green card at the 5th minute, the
Yellow card at the 6th minute, and the Red card at the end of the 7th minute and will keep it holding
until the speech ends.

(If there are speeches/presentations with special times, please identify them from the agenda and
discuss with the speaker regarding the times he/she wants the color cards to be shown and
mention here)

Table topic speakers will have 30 seconds to prepare, and 2 minutes to speak. I will ring the bell to
indicate the end of preparation time and will show the Green card at the end of 1st minute, the
Yellow card at the 1 and half minutes, and the Red card at the end of the 2nd minute and will keep it
holding until the speech ends.

At the evaluation session,

Speech evaluators will get 3 minutes for the evaluations. I will show the Green card at the end of 2nd
minute, the Yellow card at the 2 and half minutes, and the Red card at the end of the 3rd minute and
will keep it holding until the speech ends.

The table topics evaluator will get 1 and a half minutes per speech. I will show the red card at the
end of the total time.

Ah-Counter will get 2 minutes, Grammarian will get a maximum of 5 minutes for the final report and
General Evaluator will get 8 minutes.
