Study Techniques

Active recall- Practice testing (test yourself more than you read)
Test yourself after every topic.
Do not summarize content, just practice.
Taking notes in class- don't summarize contents on your own.
Stay in the front row during class.
Take notes right after class: to build active recall question, to get
more info in our notes.
Scoping the subject: when learning, know the broader picture and
narrow down so that you don't just memorize and forget.
Try to understand the topic.
Spaced Repetition: revise topics before learning new ones.
Structure it well so you don't waste time. The more you revise,
the more it sticks in your memory. Have a journal for your spaced
repetition revision. E.g. Today before I start learning a new topic, I
must revise autocorrelation, regression and maybe 2 other topics.
Do this spaced repetition thing every time (revise regression:1st
may, 5th may, 14th may...)
Interleaved: mix up practice within one study section. Learn
different topics in one session.
Re-reading is not effective so as high lightening.
Use flashcards for DCIT courses: get Anki and Quizlet.
Mind Maps: Have a central idea for everything that you’re
studying. E.g.
Put the whole syllabus in on page,
a mind map. Active recall everything and revise on those you
don’t know.
Essay Memorization Framework: Creation stage; plan what you’ll
learn with relation to past papers- create notes. Memorization
stage; use mind maps, active recall, space repetition and flash
cards.
Active Recall Framework: Write questions on every topic and go
over about 4 times on different days (space repetition). Write the
questions in word or OneNote after reading your lecture note.
When you’re re revising the first time, color code the questions
that you got wrong with red. The second time you’re revising,
revise on the red marked questions and color code the questions
you couldn’t answer in blue. Repeat that until the fourth time.
Remember that as you revise you go back to refer and do the
corrects so that you know what you’re doing as you go through
the wrong answers. Go through the whole questions again before
exams.
