Objectives of Facility Planning
• The most common goal for facilities planning is
minimization of total material handling cost (TMHC).
• But first, we need to come up with the initial layout then
improve based on it.

Initial Layout Methods
• Methods may be:
– Quantitative (INLAYT Method – Pairwise Exchange Method)
– Qualitative (Activity Relationship Charts + Diagrams)

Activity Relationship
• Indicates the relative need to place departments in close
proximity to each other.

• After constructing flow matrix:
– Ranges for each letter should be given / assumed.
– Assign each flow value to a letter.
– Draw both the diagram and chart.
