Title of Project: “A STUDY ON IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON SOCIAL WELLBEING

AND MENTAL WELLBEING OF STUDENTS ”

Introduction:
The pervasive presence of social media in the daily lives of students has brought about significant
changes in how they interact, communicate, and perceive the world around them. Platforms such as
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have become integral to students' social lives, influencing
their social dynamics, academic engagements, and mental health. While social media offers
numerous benefits, including enhanced connectivity, access to information, and social support, it
also poses potential risks to students' social and mental wellbeing.

Statement of the problem:

Despite the growing body of research on social media's impact, there remains a need for a
comprehensive understanding of how these digital interactions specifically affect the social and
mental wellbeing of students. This study seeks to bridge this gap by examining both the positive and
negative consequences of social media use on students' social relationships, self-esteem, stress
levels, and overall mental health.
Literature Survey Plan:
1. Jacqueline Nesi (2020) : The technology landscape has rapidly evolved in recent years, with
social media now playing a central role in the lives of youth. Social media has created both
significant new challenges and exciting opportunities. Research is beginning to uncover how
specific social media experiences may influence youth mental health. As the presence of new
media only continues to grow, it will be essential to develop evidence-based approaches for
encouraging healthy social media use in youth, and to effectively utilize these tools for
mental health screening and intervention.

2. Caroline Fisher (2020):This study fills that gap by examining the influence of social
media as news sources and pathways to news on perceptions of the level of news trust at a
country level. A secondary data analysis of a 26-country survey in 2016 and 2019 was
conducted. The analysis revealed an increase in social media use for accessing news
resulted in a decline in trust in news media generally across the globe. Higher levels of
general mistrust in news were related to an increased use of sharing of news. This paper
argues the use of social media for news is closely linked to the increase in news mistrust,
which is likely to continue to rise as the number of people using social media to access.

3. Miao Guo(2020): This study investigated second screen user behavior in a social
television-viewing environment. Two online consumer panels of 1,052 second screeners
were sampled to complete the three-stage research strategy. Through conceptualization and
operationalization of the second screening construct, this study identified five underlying
dimensions, including utility, control, interaction, influence, and attention. These five
dimensions demonstrate different functionalities delivered by digital devices, such as
laptop computers, tablets, and smartphones, to interact with television content. The
theoretical and practical implications of second screening were also discussed .
Proposed Research Objectives:

 To understand the awareness of potential risks and benefits of social media use

 To Study the long-term effects of social media use on the social and mental well-being of students.

 To Evaluate the potential distractions caused by social media on the students

 To identify the factors that moderate the relationship between social media use and students

Proposed Research Design:

This study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative
interviews to gather comprehensive data on students' social media use and its effects on their
wellbeing. The quantitative component will involve a structured questionnaire administered to a
representative sample of students, while the qualitative component will consist of in-depth
interviews to explore individual experiences and perspectives.

Research Methodology:
1. Source of data collection: primary source of data collection is adopted for the study. The
data will be conducted through questionnaire via google forms.

2. Sample design: I sample will be composed by 300 respondents.

3. Statistical Tools: Anova, chi-Square test, and other statistical techniques, in addition to
charts and graphs, will be utilized to evaluate and interpret primary data.

Proposed expected outcome:

The expected outcomes of this study include a detailed understanding of the complex relationship
between social media use and students' social and mental wellbeing. The findings are anticipated to
highlight both the beneficial and detrimental effects of social media, offering a nuanced perspective
that can guide future research and practical interventions.
