underlining or highlighting important patterns in the composition.

Vocabulary List the definitions of difficult words or concepts (include page # of the
text where the word is found):

Inferences Document the inferences you made while reading. (Remember that your
inferences may change while you are reading; it’s important to document
all of them; include the page # of the text of the inference)

Predictions Document the expectations or anticipations set up by the text while you are
reading; these can be anything from foreshadowing (does something in the
text suggest that something else will happen later on); setting (what do you
expect to happen in a place or time in the narrative); plot (what do you
expect to happen based on what has already happened), characterization
(what do you expect a character to do); imagery pattern (do you expect
further instances of a particular kind of imagery?); tone taken by the author;
mood created in a particular scene; repetition (is there any sort of pattern
that is repeated which indicates that it will happen again). Remember to
record the page # of the text.

Literary Devices Document all the important literary devices. Remember to include the page #
of the text.

Theme What is the theme or message of the text? Please include textual reference,
i.e., proof of the theme in the text.

Reflection What sort of connections did you make with the text? Relate it to your
life/experience, to the world, or something you’ve read or seen
before.
