Definition of Earthing

Earthing is the process of connecting the exposed metal parts of electrical equipment and
installations to the general mass of the earth through a low-resistance conductor to protect
people and equipment from electric shock.

2. Purpose of Earthing

The purposes of earthing are to:

 Protect people from electric shock.

 Provide a low-resistance path for fault current.

 Protect electrical equipment from damage.

 Prevent electrical fires caused by leakage current.

 Ensure protective devices (fuses and circuit breakers) operate quickly.

 Stabilize system voltage.

 Reduce lightning damage.

3. Importance of Earthing

Earthing is important because it:

 Prevents electrocution.

 Prevents equipment damage.

 Reduces fire hazards.

 Improves safety.

 Protects buildings during lightning.

 Ensures proper operation of protective devices.

4. Types of Earthing

(a) Equipment Earthing

Connects the metallic body of electrical equipment to earth.

Examples:

 Electric iron

 Refrigerator

 Washing machine

 Distribution board

Purpose:

 Protects users from electric shock.

(b) System Earthing

Connects one point of the electrical supply (usually the neutral) to earth.

Purpose:

 Stabilizes system voltage.

 Improves fault protection.

5. Components of an Earthing System

 Earth electrode (rod or plate)

 Earth conductor

 Earth continuity conductor

 Earth clamp

 Inspection pit

 Main earthing terminal (MET)

6. Earthing Materials

 Copper earth rod

 Galvanized steel rod

 Copper earth wire

 Earth clamp

 Charcoal

 Salt

 Water

 Inspection chamber

 Earth plate

7. Types of Earth Electrodes

(a) Rod Electrode

 Copper rod

 Steel rod

Most common.

(b) Plate Electrode

 Copper plate

 Galvanized iron plate

Buried deep underground.

(c) Pipe Electrode

Uses a galvanized steel pipe.

(d) Strip Electrode

Uses a copper or steel strip buried horizontally.

8. Earthing Conductors

A conductor used to connect the installation to the earth electrode.

Usually made of:

 Copper

 Aluminium

 Galvanized steel

9. Earth Continuity Conductor (ECC)

Connects exposed metal parts of equipment to the main earthing terminal.

Purpose:

 Carries fault current safely to earth.

10. Earthing Resistance

The resistance between the earth electrode and the surrounding soil.

Good earthing resistance should be as low as possible.

11. Factors Affecting Earthing Resistance

 Soil type

 Soil moisture

 Temperature

 Electrode depth

 Electrode length

 Electrode diameter

 Number of electrodes

12. Methods of Improving Earthing

 Increase electrode depth.

 Add more earth rods.

 Keep soil moist.

 Use charcoal and salt.

 Use larger electrodes.

 Connect rods in parallel.

13. Earthing Procedure

1. Select a suitable location.

2. Dig an earth pit.

3. Drive the earth rod into the ground.

4. Connect the earth conductor.

5. Tighten the earth clamp.

6. Fill the pit with charcoal and salt.

7. Water the pit.

8. Cover with an inspection chamber.

9. Test earth resistance.

17. Advantages of Earthing

 Prevents electric shock.

 Prevents electrical fires.

 Protects appliances.

 Protects buildings.

 Improves system reliability.

 Reduces lightning damage.

 Ensures correct operation of protective devices.

18. Disadvantages of Poor Earthing

 Electric shock.

 Fire outbreak.

 Equipment damage.

 Circuit breaker failure.

 Voltage fluctuations.

 Electrical accidents.
19. Earthing Safety Precautions

 Wear PPE.

 Isolate the supply before work.

 Use the correct size of conductor.

 Ensure all connections are tight.

 Test before energizing.

 Inspect the system regularly.

20. Earthing Testing

Tests carried out include:

 Earth resistance test

 Continuity test

 Earth fault loop impedance test

 Visual inspection

Instrument used:

 Earth resistance tester (Earth Megger)

21. Applications of Earthing

Earthing is used in:
