Individual Guide for Learners Module 2

Computer Software: Systems and Applications

Module Overview: In this lesson, you will learn about the role of computer software. We
will explore the differences between Systems Software and Application Software, look at
common operating systems, and understand how they work together with hardware to help
users perform tasks efficiently.

📖 Information Sheet 1.2: Computer Software

What is Software?
Software is a set of instructions, data, or programs used to operate a computer and execute
specific tasks. While hardware acts as the physical body of a computer, software provides the
intelligence and instructions that make it functional.

The Two Major Categories of Software

1. Systems Software
Systems software is a program designed to run a computer's hardware and applications and
manage its resources, such as its memory, processors, and devices. It works silently in the
background to handle fundamental operations like

 loading programs into memory,

 executing software instructions,
 saving data to disks,
 displaying information on a monitor, and
 transmitting data through ports to peripheral devices.

Examples of Systems Software:

• Operating Systems (OS): Windows, macOS (e.g., macOS 12), Linux (e.g., Ubuntu 22.04
Desktop), Android (versions like Cupcake, Pie, Android 15), and iOS.
• Security & Utilities: Windows Defender, device drivers, system monitors, and disk cleanup
utilities.
2. Application Software
Application software is designed to handle specific tasks for users, helping people do their work
more efficiently or enjoy entertainment. It has the potential to turn a general-purpose computer
into an specialized workspace or entertainment hub.

Examples of Application Software:

• Word Processors & Productivity: Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Calc, LibreOffice Writer, Google
Docs, and financial utilities like GCash.
• Media & Creative Tools: Adobe Premiere Pro (video editing), Adobe Photoshop (image
manipulation), and media players (Cheese, Videos).
• Gaming & Entertainment: Mobile games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (M Legends),
browser games, and solitaire utilities (AisleRiot Solitaire).
✏️Activity 1.2: Check Your Understanding

Part I: Identification
Directions: Identify whether the item being described is Systems Software or Application
Software.

1. A program explicitly engineered to manage structural computer resources such as

system memory and core processor chips.
2. A productivity tool, such as Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Calc, utilized by individuals
to accomplish distinct everyday office tasks.
3. Software that performs fundamental operations like saving files to long-term disks
and outputting images via visual monitor ports.
4. A security suite or utility tool like Windows Defender designed to protect and clean
up the environment background.
5. Mobile applications or mobile entertainment products like GCash and Mobile
Legends: Bang Bang.

Part II: True or False

Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is entirely factual, and FALSE if it contains an error
based on the text.

1. Software refers strictly to physical hardware elements like processors, cables, and
physical system frames.
2. Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop, macOS 12, and Android 15 are all real-world examples of
Systems Software.
3. Application software works behind the scenes to directly run peripheral data ports, load
system blocks, and execute processor commands.
4. Programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop are classified as application
software because they address specific creative tasks for users.
5. Operating systems have names derived from sweet desserts, such as Cupcake, Donut,
and Froyo, during early versions of Android history.

Part III: Essay
