CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The advancement of information and communication technology has transformed the way people
communicate, access information, and interact with one another. Among the major developments
in information technology is the emergence of social media platforms. Social media refers to
internet-based applications that enable users to create, share, and exchange information through
virtual communities and networks.

In recent years, social media platforms such as Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok,
WhatsApp, and YouTube have gained widespread popularity among university students. These
platforms provide opportunities for communication, collaboration, information sharing,
entertainment, and educational activities. Students use social media to access academic materials,
discuss assignments, communicate with classmates and instructors, and obtain information
related to their studies.

Despite the numerous benefits associated with social media, concerns have been raised regarding
its impact on students' academic performance. Excessive use of social media may consume a
significant amount of students' time, reduce concentration, create distractions during study hours,
and affect academic achievement. On the other hand, social media can support learning by
providing access to educational resources and facilitating academic discussions.

As social media continues to play an important role in students' lives, it becomes necessary to
examine its influence on academic performance. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the
impact of social media usage on the academic performance of university students.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Social media has become an integral part of university students' daily activities. Students spend a
considerable amount of time using various social media platforms for communication,
entertainment, and educational purposes. Although social media offers several opportunities for
learning and information exchange, excessive usage may negatively affect academic
performance.

Many students devote substantial portions of their time to social networking sites, which may
lead to reduced study time, lack of concentration, procrastination, and poor academic outcomes.
Furthermore, students may become distracted by non-academic content available on social media
platforms.
Although several studies have investigated the relationship between social media usage and
academic performance, findings remain inconsistent. Some studies report positive effects, while
others indicate negative consequences. Therefore, there is a need to assess the impact of social
media usage on the academic performance of university students.

1.3 Significance of the Study

This study is expected to provide several benefits.

To Students

The study will help students understand the effects of social media usage on their academic
performance and encourage responsible use of social networking platforms.

To Instructors

The findings will assist instructors in understanding how social media influences students'
learning behavior and academic achievement.

To Universities

The study will provide useful information that can support policy formulation and awareness
programs regarding effective social media use.

To Researchers

The study will serve as a source of information and reference material for future researchers
interested in similar topics.

1.4 Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on assessing the impact of social media usage on the academic performance
of university students. The study is limited to selected undergraduate students and selected social
media platforms including Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, and YouTube.

The study specifically examines the amount of time spent on social media, purposes of social
media usage, and their influence on students' academic achievement.

1.5 Limitation of the Study

The study may encounter several limitations including:

 Limited time available for conducting the research.

 Financial constraints during data collection.
 Inaccurate or incomplete responses from respondents.
 Limited availability of related literature and documents.

Despite these limitations, efforts will be made to ensure the reliability and validity of the study.

1.6 Objectives of the Study

1.6.1 General Objective

To investigate the impact of social media usage on the academic performance of university
students.

1.6.2 Specific Objectives

1. To identify the social media platforms commonly used by university students.

2. To determine the amount of time students spend on social media daily.
3. To assess the impact of social media usage on students' academic performance.
4. To examine the relationship between social media usage and students' GPA.
5. To suggest strategies for minimizing the negative effects of excessive social media usage.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Social Media

Online communication platforms that enable users to create, share, and exchange information
through the internet.

Academic Performance

The level of academic achievement attained by students as measured through GPA, examination
scores, assignments, and classroom participation.

University Student

An individual enrolled in a higher education institution pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate

studies.

GPA (Grade Point Average)

A numerical measure used to evaluate a student's academic performance over a specified period.

1.8 Research Questions

This study seeks to answer the following research questions:
1. Which social media platforms are most commonly used by university students?
2. How much time do students spend on social media daily?
3. What impact does social media usage have on students' academic performance?
4. Is there a relationship between social media usage and GPA?
5. What measures can be taken to reduce the negative effects of social media usage?

1.9 Organization of the Study

The study is organized into three chapters. Chapter One presents the introduction, background of
the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study, scope, limitations, objectives,
definition of terms, and research questions. Chapter Two reviews related literature concerning
social media and academic performance. Chapter Three describes the research methodology
including research design, population, sampling techniques, data collection methods, and data
analysis procedures.
