This Self-Learning Module (SLM) will help you understand the different aspects of Speech, its purposes,
methods of delivery, and styles. The goal is for you to become more confident and effective when speaking in
various situations.

Lesson 1: Speech
Speech is the process of expressing thoughts, ideas, and feelings through spoken words. It is a powerful tool
for influencing others, sharing information, and building relationships.

Importance of Speech:
• Builds connection with the audience

• Shares ideas effectively

• Influences decisions

• Expresses emotions

Lesson 2: Speech According to Purpose


• Informative Speech – To provide facts, data, or knowledge. Example: 'The History of Philippine
Literature' lecture.

• Persuasive Speech – To convince or influence the audience. Example: Campaign speech on


environmental protection.

• Entertainment Speech – To amuse or engage the audience. Example: Stand-up comedy or humorous
storytelling.

Lesson 3: Methods of Speech Delivery


• Manuscript – Reading a written speech word-for-word. Advantage: Exact wording; Disadvantage: Less
eye contact.

• Memorized – Reciting from memory. Advantage: No need to read; Disadvantage: Risk of forgetting lines.

• Impromptu – Speaking without preparation. Advantage: Natural; Disadvantage: Less organized.


• Extemporaneous – Speaking with preparation but without memorizing word-for-word. Advantage:
Flexible; Disadvantage: Needs practice.

Lesson 4: Speech Styles


• Intimate – Used with close relationships.

• Casual – Used among friends.

• Consultative – Semi-formal (teacher–student).

• Formal – Formal settings (speeches, official meetings).

• Frozen – Fixed and unchanging (pledges, national anthems).
