Chapter 10 — Trigonometric Identities

Sum & Difference of Angles · Allied Angles · Double, Half & Triple Angle · Product & Sum Identities

1 · Fundamental Law of Trigonometry & Sum/Difference Identities

Fundamental Law: cos(α – β) = cosα cosβ + sinα sinβ Cosine: cos(α + β) = cosα cosβ – sinα sinβ
Sine (sum): sin(α + β) = sinα cosβ + cosα sinβ Sine (diff): sin(α – β) = sinα cosβ – cosα sinβ
Tangent (sum): tan(α + β) = (tanα + tanβ) / (1 – tanα tanβ) Tangent (diff): tan(α – β) = (tanα – tanβ) / (1 + tanα tanβ)

2 · Allied Angle Identities

sin(π/2 – θ) = cosθ cos(π/2 – θ) = sinθ tan(π/2 – θ) = cotθ

sin(π/2 + θ) = cosθ cos(π/2 + θ) = –sinθ tan(π/2 + θ) = –cotθ
sin(π – θ) = sinθ cos(π – θ) = –cosθ tan(π – θ) = –tanθ
sin(π + θ) = –sinθ cos(π + θ) = –cosθ tan(π + θ) = tanθ
sin(3π/2 – θ) = –cosθ cos(3π/2 – θ) = –sinθ tan(3π/2 – θ) = cotθ
sin(3π/2 + θ) = –cosθ cos(3π/2 + θ) = sinθ tan(3π/2 + θ) = –cotθ
sin(2π – θ) = –sinθ cos(2π – θ) = cosθ tan(2π – θ) = –tanθ
sin(2π + θ) = sinθ cos(2π + θ) = cosθ tan(2π + θ) = tanθ
2 2
Form: a sinθ + b cosθ = r sin(θ + φ) where r = √(a + b ), a = r cosφ, b = r sinφ

3 · Double Angle Identities

sin 2α = 2 sinα cosα tan 2α = 2 tanα / (1 – tan2α)

2 2
cos 2α = cos α – sin α cos 2α = 1 – 2 sin2α
cos 2α = 2 cos2α – 1 sin2α = (1 – cos 2α) / 2 | cos2α = (1 + cos 2α) / 2

4 · Half Angle Identities

sin(θ/2) = ± √[(1 – cosθ) / 2] cos(θ/2) = ± √[(1 + cosθ) / 2]

tan(θ/2) = ± √[(1 – cosθ) / (1 + cosθ)] (+) if θ/2 in QI or QII ; (–) if θ/2 in QIII or QIV

5 · Triple Angle Identities

sin 3α = 3 sinα – 4 sin3α cos 3α = 4 cos3α – 3 cosα tan 3α = (3 tanα – tan3α) / (1 – 3 tan2α)

6 · Product-to-Sum Formulae

2 sinα cosβ = sin(α + β) + sin(α – β) 2 cosα sinβ = sin(α + β) – sin(α – β)

2 cosα cosβ = cos(α + β) + cos(α – β) 2 sinα sinβ = cos(α – β) – cos(α + β)

7 · Sum-to-Product Formulae

sinα + sinβ = 2 sin[(α+β)/2] cos[(α–β)/2] sinα – sinβ = 2 cos[(α+β)/2] sin[(α–β)/2]

cosα + cosβ = 2 cos[(α+β)/2] cos[(α–β)/2] cosα – cosβ = –2 sin[(α+β)/2] sin[(α–β)/2]
