6th Grade Math Review Sheet
Moderate-Advanced Practice | No Calculator | Preparing for 7th Grade Math
Name: _______________________________ Date: ______________ Score: _____ / 30
Section 1 — Ratios, Rates & Unit Rates
Show your reasoning. Simplify all ratios and rates.
1. A recipe uses flour and sugar in the ratio 5 : 3. If a baker uses 40 cups of flour, how much sugar is
needed?
2. A car travels 273 miles using 13 gallons of gas. At this rate, how many miles can it travel on 20
gallons of gas?
3. Two stores sell the same notebook. Store A: 8 notebooks for \$18.40. Store B: 5 notebooks for
\$11.75. Which store has the better unit price? Show your work.
4. A painter mixes blue and white paint in a ratio of 7 : 4 to make a certain shade of gray. If she wants to
make 66 liters of this gray paint, how many liters of blue paint and how many liters of white paint does
she need?
Section 2 — Operations with Fractions & Decimals
All work must be done by hand. Leave answers in simplest form (fraction or mixed number where appropriate).
5. Evaluate: 2 3/4 divided by 1 1/5
6. Evaluate: (3 1/3 - 1 5/8) x 2 2/5
7. A ribbon is 12 1/2 feet long. It is cut into pieces that are each 5/6 foot long. How many full pieces can
be cut, and how much ribbon (in feet) is left over?
8. Evaluate without a calculator: 4.75 + 3.6 x 2.5 - 1.125
9. A tank is 2/5 full of water. After 18 gallons are added, the tank is 3/4 full. What is the total capacity of
the tank, in gallons?
Section 3 — Integers, Absolute Value & the Coordinate Plane
Recall: |a| is the distance of a from 0 on the number line.
10. Order from least to greatest: -7, 4, -12, 0, -3, 9
11. Evaluate: |-15| - |8| + |-3|
12. Point A is located at (-4, 5) and Point B is located at (-4, -9) on a coordinate plane. Find the distance
between Point A and Point B.
13. A submarine is at an elevation of -120 meters. It rises 45 meters, then descends 68 meters. What is
its new elevation?
14. Plot and identify which quadrant each point lies in (no graphing needed -- just name the quadrant):
(-6, 2), (3, -8), (-5, -1), (7, 4)
Section 4 — Expressions, Equations & Inequalities
Solve each equation or inequality and show all steps. Simplify expressions fully.
15. Simplify: 5(2x - 3) - 4(x - 6)
16. Solve for x: 4x + 9 = 7x - 12
17. Solve for x: x/3 - 5 = 2
18. Solve and graph on a number line: 3x - 4 < 11
19. The perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 3 cm more than twice its width. Find the length
and width.
20. Write an algebraic expression for: 'seven less than three times a number, increased by twice the
same number.' Then simplify the expression.
Section 5 — Area, Surface Area & Volume
Use exact values (leave as fractions where needed). Show all formulas used.
21. Find the area of a triangle with base 14 cm and height 9 cm.
22. A trapezoid has parallel sides of length 12 in and 18 in, and a height of 7 in. Find its area.
23. A rectangular prism has dimensions 5 1/2 ft x 4 ft x 3 1/3 ft. Find its volume.
24. A cube-shaped box has edge length 6 cm. Find its total surface area.
25. A composite figure is made of a rectangle (10 cm by 6 cm) with a right triangle (base 6 cm, height 8
cm) attached to one side. Find the total area of the figure.
Section 6 — Statistics & Data Distributions
Show your work for each measure of center and spread.
26. Find the mean, median, mode, and range of this data set: 12, 15, 12, 19, 22, 15, 12, 25, 18
27. A data set of 7 scores has a mean of 84. If six of the scores are 78, 90, 85, 82, 88, 79, find the
seventh score.
28. Find the interquartile range (IQR) of this data set: 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, 24
Section 7 — Percents
No calculator — use fraction/decimal equivalents and mental math strategies.
29. What is 35% of 180?
30. A shirt originally priced at \$64 is on sale for 25% off. A sales tax of 8% is then applied to the
discounted price. What is the final price?
