Cell Biology Course Outline Assignment
Worth 0.8%, due at the start of Class Friday Jan 23, 2026. As you walk into the classroom, please
hand in completed assignment. No late assignments will be accepted.
Purpose: The course outline contains essential class information. This exercise helps you
review key policies, procedures, dates, and expectations so you can start the course
prepared and confident!
Instructions: Answer the following questions based on the course outline.
1. Where is my (teacher’s) office located? 7B10-1
2. Is a lab coat required for all laboratory sessions? Yes
3. Where are students expected to go to access the labs each week? The lab exercises
are available in digital format on Moodle.
4. What are the class test dates & weight of each? Class Test I is on the week of
March 9th and worth 17%. Class Test II is on the week of May 4th and worth 17%. The
cumulative final exam is TBA and worth 30%.
5. What area the lab test dates & weight of each? Lab Test I is on the week of March 2nd
(12%). Lab Test II is on the week of Apr. 27th (12%).
6. What is final exam period dates? May 20 to May 29
7. What are the minimum requirements/criteria needed to pass the course? A minimum
overall average grade of 60% that includes all assessments. A minimum average
grade of 60% for evaluations in the theory component. A minimum average grade of
60% for evaluations in the laboratory component.
8. It is you responsibility to do what PRIOR to each lab? It is your responsibility to read
the lab exercise and complete any preparatory assignments before coming to the lab
period to prepare. Each lab exercise will be available in LÉA or Moodle at least 5 days
prior to the lab period.

10. What is the attendance policy for: a) lectures? b) laboratory sessions? Lecture
Attendance: Attendance to all lectures is expected. Failure to attend these lectures is
likely to result in failure in the course due to poor performance. However, attendance
is compulsory during periods where an in-class assessment is given (as stated in the
course schedule). Lab Attendance: Attendance to all lab exercises is compulsory as
each lab is linked to an evaluation. A lab test is considered an in-class assessment.
11. List the four main lab safety rules (or the four key lab rules stated in the outline).
i) Eating and drinking in the laboratories are strictly forbidden. This rule also
applies to the drinking of bottled water.

ii) Students are required to wear a cloth lab coat whenever they are in the lab.
This includes lectures and tests that are given in the lab.
iii) At all times when completing a lab, students are required to wear appropriate
footwear and have their hair tied back (if they have long hair).
iv) Cell phones must be turned off and put away. In some cases, cell phones may
be allowed by the teacher to carry out lab activities.
12. Where should students wait before the start of each lab session? Why is this location
and procedure necessary? Students must wait near the elevators (between the 5A
and 5B wings until our teacher escorts us to our lab to not disturb the other classes in
progress and faculty in their offices.
13. Summarize the Biology Department policy for missing an in-class assessment(s).
Students are not allowed to write make-up assessments for in-class assessments that
were missed for any reason. If an assessment is missed for a valid reason like because of
illness, intensive course, religious observance, an adjustment to the evaluation will be
made so that the student is not penalized, exceptions being lab tests. When a student
misses an in-class assessment for a valid reason, either the grade from the final exam or
the class test will be used for the weight carried by the class test, assignment or quiz that
was missed. When the student misses a Lab Test, an alternate assessment that carries the
same weight and covers the same material will be offered at another date. For an absence
due to an intensive courses or religious observance, the form must be submitted within the
first 2 weeks. If an assessment is missed for an invalid reason, the student will receive a
grade of zero.
14. What happens if a student misses a laboratory session for a valid reason?
Missing a lab exercise will result in a grade of zero for the assessment linked to that lab. If
there was a valid reason, the student will not be penalized in the course evaluation. The
grade from a suitable assessment that covers the material like a lab test will be used for
the weight carried by the missed assessment(s) for that lab period. It should also be
noted that a make-up lab will NOT be offered, and it is the responsibility of the student to
catch up on the course content missed via their lab partner or classmates.

16. What is the policy regarding late submissions? Marks will be deducted for any
work submitted late. Deductions are 10% when the work is not submitted to the
teacher by the exact time and date due. An additional 10% deduction per day (24
hrs) late (including weekends). Students will receive a grade of zero after work is 5
days late. The exception is if the answers to an assessment will be given or
reviewed on the day it is due like if it will be discussed in class or answers made
available, the teacher reserves the right to refuse a late submission and assign a
grade of zero for that assessment.
17. If you will be missing a class/lab period due to a religious holiday and/or a Physical
Education intensive, what is the deadline for submitting the appropriate form to the
instructor? (Refer to the form on page 9.) February 3rd
18. Please review course schedule on page 8. Most importantly look at the lab schedule.
Pease refer to it each week to know which lab we will be doing. Please note it is up to
you to come to the lab prepared each week. This means you must read over the lab,
have an idea of what we will be doing (make notes, this will also help you for the
lab tests) & fill out any pre-lab or any theoretical questions based on knowledge
already discussed in class BEFORE each lab period.
