1. Introduction
Statistics is the branch of mathematics that deals with collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting numerical
data in order to draw meaningful conclusions. In everyday life, statistics helps us understand patterns, make
comparisons, and take informed decisions based on evidence rather than guesswork.
Data collection is an important real-life skill. Whether it is a government planning public services, a business studying
customer behaviour, or a student trying to understand a habit among peers, the process of collecting and analyzing
data helps convert raw observations into useful information.
In recent years, screen time - the amount of time spent using mobile phones, television, computers, and other digital
devices - has become an important topic of discussion, especially among teenagers. With the rise of smartphones,
social media, and online learning, teenagers today spend a significant part of their day in front of screens.
This project studies the screen time habits of teenagers through a survey, and uses statistical tools such as tables,
histograms, mean, median, and mode to analyze how this habit may be influencing their study routine, sleep, and
overall health.
2. Purpose of the Survey
The survey was conducted with the following objectives in mind:
● To find the average screen time of teenagers per day.
● To understand how much time is spent on studies versus entertainment.
● To identify which activity (social media, gaming, study, or videos) takes up most of a teenager's screen time.
● To analyze whether screen time affects sleep and daily activities.
● To apply statistical tools (mean, median, mode, and histogram) to real, self-collected data.
3. Survey Questionnaire
The following questionnaire was used to survey 15 teenagers (classmates and friends):
● 1. How many hours per day do you spend on your mobile phone?
● 2. How many hours do you spend watching TV or streaming platforms (Netflix, YouTube, etc.)?
● 3. How many hours do you spend on screens specifically for study purposes (online classes, research)?
● 4. Which activity takes up most of your screen time? (Social Media / Gaming / Study / Watching Videos)
● 5. Do you think screen time affects your sleep? (Yes / No)
● 6. Do you feel screen time affects your daily physical activity? (Yes / No)
4. Data Collection
The total screen time (in hours per day) reported by each of the 15 students surveyed is recorded below:

1 3
2 5
3 4
4 6

5. Data Tabulation
The raw data above is grouped into class intervals to form a frequency distribution table:
Number of Students
Screen Time (Hours) Tally Marks
(Frequency)
1-2 2 II
3-4 5 IIII I
5-6 7 IIII II
7-8 1 I
Total number of students surveyed, n = 15
6. Graphical Representation
A histogram was drawn to show the distribution of screen time among the surveyed students. The reference chart
below can be redrawn neatly on the project page using a ruler and pencil, with bars for each class interval:
Reference histogram - redraw by hand on graph/project paper, labeling both axes clearly.
7. Statistical Analysis
Mean (Average) Screen Time
Mean = (Sum of all observations) / (Number of observations)
Sum of all observations = 3+5+4+6+2+5+3+4+6+5+4+5+7+2+6 = 67
Number of observations, n = 15
Mean = 67 / 15 = 4.47 hours (approximately)
Median Screen Time
Arranging the data in ascending order:
2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7
Since n = 15 (odd), the median is the value at position (n+1)/2 = 8th position.
Median = 5 hours
Mode of Screen Time
Mode is the value that occurs most frequently in the data set.
From the data, 5 hours occurs 4 times - more than any other value.
Mode = 5 hours
8. Interpretation of Data
Based on the survey, tabulation, and statistical analysis, the following observations can be made:
● Most students (about 47%) spend between 5-6 hours a day on screens, and a majority fall in the 3-6 hour
range.
● The average (mean) screen time of 4.47 hours, along with a median and mode of 5 hours, shows that a large
number of teenagers spend a significant part of their day on screens.
● Social media and video streaming were reported by most students as the activities that consume the largest
share of their screen time, followed by gaming, with study-related screen time being comparatively lower.
● A majority of students who reported higher screen time (6-7 hours) also felt that it affected their sleep and
reduced time available for physical activity.
● This suggests a possible link between excessive recreational screen use and reduced time for studies, sleep,
and exercise.
9. Conclusion
The survey shows that teenagers spend a considerable amount of time on screens every day, with an average of about
4-5 hours daily. While technology plays an important role in learning, communication, and entertainment, excessive
screen time - especially on social media, gaming, and streaming - can affect sleep, physical activity, and study
routines.
It is therefore important for teenagers to maintain a balanced daily routine that gives adequate time to studies, physical
activity, sleep, and mindful use of screens, so that technology remains a helpful tool rather than a source of distraction.
