UNIT 1: FUNCTIONS
Lesson 1: Representing Functions
Lesson 2: Evaluating a Function
UNIVERSITY OF BOHOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL | S.Y. 2022-2023, FIRST SEMESTER
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students can:
● Correctly define a function and relations.
● Properly represent a function using function notation.
● Find the domain and range of different function.
● Correctly find the value of a function at a given value of 𝑥.
Are you familiar with taxes? You
might wonder how the Value Added
Tax (VAT) affects your electric and
water bills someday. You might also
worry that this value varies every
month.
You have to keep in mind that the
tax charged to consumers, like your
household, is a function of the
amount of consumption in a
particular month.
In this lesson, you will learn about
functions and how it is applied in
real life situations.
Essential Questions
● What is a function?
● How will you represent functions?
● How will you determine whether a given equation is a function?
What is RELATION?
• It is a collection of ordered pairs containing one object from
each set.
• If the object x is from the first set and the object y is from the second
set, then the object are said to be related if the ordered pair (x , y) s in
the relation.
• Any set of ordered pair.
What is FUNCTION?
It is a special kind of relation in which no two distinct ordered pairs
have the same first element.
In an equation in two variables, 𝑥 and 𝑦, the variable 𝑦 may be
expressed as 𝒇(𝒙) if every value of 𝑥 corresponds to a single value of 𝑦.
Independent and Dependent Variables
The value that a function takes in is called the input or the independent
variable while the corresponding value that it produces is the output or the
dependent variable.
Example:
Assume that you are in a grocery store. Each grocery item has its own
corresponding price.
This is an example of a function wherein the independent variable is the grocery
item while the dependent variable is its price.
Piecewise Function
It is a function composed of two or more expressions for the
different parts of the domain.
Example:
3𝑥 if 𝑥 < 0
𝑔 𝑥 = ቐ−1 if 𝑥 = 0
𝑥 2 if 𝑥 > 0
One-to-One Correspondence
Each value of the independent variable (𝑥) is unique and is
associated with a unique value of the dependent variable (𝑦)
Many-to-One Correspondence
Two or more values of 𝑥 is associated with the same value of 𝑦.
One-to-Many Correspondence
Some values of 𝑥 are associated with more than one value of 𝑦
Many-to-Many Correspondence
Some values of 𝑥 and 𝑦 are associated with more than one value of their
counterpart
Recall:
A function because no two ordered pairs have the same first element.
Determine whether the following set is a function.
𝐴 = { 2,3 , 4,5 , 6,7 , (8,9)}

Graph of a Function
Vertical Line Test
A graph of a mathematical relation is a
function if any vertical line drawn passing through
the graph intersects the graph at exactly one point.

Domain of Functions
• Finding the domain:
• Solve the equation for y in terms of x.
• If y is a polynomial, the domain is the sat of real numbers.
• If y is a rational expression and contains an expression
d(x) in the denominator, the domain is the set of real
numbers, except those values of x that make d(x) equal to
0.
• If y contains a radical expression 𝑛 𝑟(𝑥) where n is an
even natural number, the domain is the set of real
numbers that make r(x) greater than or equal to 0.

Range of Functions
• Finding the range:
• Solve the equation for x in terms of y.
• If x is a polynomial, the range is the set of real numbers.
Exclude all restrictions in the defining equation (where y is
in terms of x), if there is any.
• If x is a rational expression and contains an expression
d(y) in the denominator, the range is the set or real
numbers except those values of y that make d(y) equal to
0.
𝑛
• If y contains a radical expression 𝑟(𝑦) where n is an
even natural number, the domain is the set of real
numbers that make r(y) greater than or equal to 0.

Evaluates a Function:
When a function f is defined by y=f(x)
x=independent variable
The resulting value determines the corresponding value
of the dependent variable y.
Rules in Evaluating a Function
To evaluate a function f(x), the basic rule applies:
Replace x in the function rule with the entire expression
in the parentheses, then simplify.
EXAMPLE
Evaluate the function:
2
f(x)=𝑥 +3x-2
x=-3
f(-3)=(−3)2 +3(-3)-2
=9+(-9)-2
=-2
EXAMPLE
2
f(x)=𝑥 +3x-2
x=0
f(0)=(0)2 +3(0)-2
=0+0-2
=-2
Exercise #1
Which of the following sets of ordered pairs are
function?
