Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are
programmed to think and act like humans. It involves the development of algorithms and
computer programs that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence such as
visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

In today's world, technology is growing very fast, and we are getting in touch with different new
technologies day by day.

Here, one of the booming technologies of computer science is Artificial Intelligence which is
ready to create a new revolution in the world by making intelligent [Link] Artificial
Intelligence is now all around us.

Artificial Intelligence is composed of two words Artificial and Intelligence, where Artificial
defines "man-made," and intelligence defines "thinking power", hence AI means "a man-
made thinking power."

So, we can define AI as:

"It is a branch of computer science by which we can create intelligent machines which can
behave like a human, think like humans, and be able to make decisions."

Why Artificial Intelligence?

Before Learning about Artificial Intelligence, we should know what is the importance of AI and
why we should learn it. Following are some main reasons to learn about AI:

● With the help of AI, you can create such software or devices which can solve real-world
problems very easily and with accuracy such as health issues, marketing, traffic issues,
etc.
● With the help of AI, you can create your personal virtual Assistant, such as Cortana,
Google Assistant, Siri, etc.
● With the help of AI, you can build such Robots which can work in an environment where
survival of humans can be at risk.
● AI opens a path for other new technologies, new devices, and new Opportunities.
The main focus of artificial intelligence is towards understanding human behavior and
performance. This can be done by creating computers with human-like intelligence and
capabilities.

Goals of Artificial Intelligence

Following are the main goals of Artificial Intelligence:

1. Replicate human intelligence

2. Solve Knowledge-intensive tasks
3. An intelligent connection of perception and action
4. Building a machine which can perform tasks that requires human intelligence such as:
○ Proving a theorem
○ Playing chess
○ Plan some surgical operation
○ Driving a car in traffic
5. Creating some system which can exhibit intelligent behavior, learn new things by itself,
demonstrate, explain, and can advise its user.

What Comprises Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence is not just a part of computer science even though it's so vast and requires
lots of other factors which can contribute to it. To create the AI first we should know how
intelligence is composed, so the Intelligence is an intangible part of our brain which is a
combination of Reasoning, learning, problem-solving perception, language understanding,
etc.

To achieve the above factors for a machine or software Artificial Intelligence requires the
following discipline:

● Mathematics
● Biology
● Psychology
● Sociology
● Computer Science
● Neurons Study
● Statistics
Advantages of Artificial Intelligence
Following are some main advantages of Artificial Intelligence:

● High Accuracy with less errors: AI machines or systems are prone to less errors and
high accuracy as it takes decisions as per pre-experience or information.
● High-Speed: AI systems can be of very high-speed and fast-decision making, because of
that AI systems can beat a chess champion in the Chess game.
● High reliability: AI machines are highly reliable and can perform the same action
multiple times with high accuracy.
● Useful for risky areas: AI machines can be helpful in situations such as defusing a
bomb, exploring the ocean floor, where employing a human can be risky.

purposes, Natural language processing to communicate with the human in human-
language, etc.
Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence
Every technology has some disadvantages, and the same goes for Artificial intelligence. Being
such an advantageous technology still, it has some disadvantages which we need to keep in our
mind while creating an AI system. Following are the disadvantages of AI:

● High Cost: The hardware and software requirement of AI is very costly as it requires lots
of maintenance to meet current world requirements.
● Can't think out of the box: Even though we are making smarter machines with AI, still
they cannot work out of the box, as the robot will only do that work for which they are
trained, or programmed.
● No feelings and emotions: AI machines can be an outstanding performer, but still it does
not have the feeling so it cannot make any kind of emotional attachment with humans,
and may sometime be harmful for users if the proper care is not taken.
● Increase dependency on machines: With the increment of technology, people are
getting more dependent on devices and hence they are losing their mental capabilities.
● No Original Creativity: As humans are so creative and can imagine some new ideas but
still AI machines cannot beat this power of human intelligence and cannot be creative and
imaginative.

provide insights that can aid in decision-making. This can be especially useful in domains
like finance, healthcare, and logistics, where decisions can have significant impacts on
outcomes.
5. Enhanced accuracy: Artificial intelligence algorithms can process data quickly and
accurately, reducing the risk of errors that can occur in manual processes. This can
improve the reliability and quality of results.
6. Personalization: Artificial intelligence can be used to personalize experiences for users,
tailoring recommendations, and interactions based on individual preferences and
behaviors. This can improve customer satisfaction and loyalty.
7. Exploration of new frontiers: Artificial intelligence can be used to explore new frontiers
and discover new knowledge that is difficult or impossible for humans to access. This can
lead to new breakthroughs in fields like astronomy, genetics, and drug discovery.

Approaches of AI

There are a total of four approaches of AI and that are as follows:

● Acting humanly (The Turing Test approach): This approach was designed by Alan
Turing. The ideology behind this approach is that a computer passes the test if a human
interrogator, after asking some written questions, cannot identify whether the written
responses come from a human or from a computer.
● Thinking humanly (The cognitive modeling approach): The idea behind this approach
is to determine whether the computer thinks like a human.
● Thinking rationally (The “laws of thought” approach): The idea behind this approach
is to determine whether the computer thinks rationally i.e. with logical reasoning.
● Acting rationally (The rational agent approach): The idea behind this approach is to
determine whether the computer acts rationally i.e. with logical reasoning.
● Machine Learning approach: This approach involves training machines to learn from
data and improve performance on specific tasks over time. It is widely used in areas such
as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and recommender
systems.
● Evolutionary approach: This approach is inspired by the process of natural selection in
biology. It involves generating and testing a large number of variations of a solution to a
problem, and then selecting and combining the most successful variations to create a new
generation of solutions.
● Neural Networks approach: This approach involves building artificial neural networks
that are modeled after the structure and function of the human brain. Neural networks can
be used for tasks such as pattern recognition, prediction, and decision-making.
● Fuzzy logic approach: This approach involves reasoning with uncertain and imprecise
information, which is common in real-world situations. Fuzzy logic can be used to model
and control complex systems in areas such as robotics, automotive control, and industrial
automation.
● Hybrid approach: This approach combines multiple AI techniques to solve complex
problems. For example, a hybrid approach might use machine learning to analyze data
and identify patterns, and then use logical reasoning to make decisions based on those
patterns.

Applications of AI include Natural Language Processing, Gaming, Speech Recognition,

Vision Systems, Healthcare, Automotive, etc.

Forms of AI:

1) Weak AI:

● Weak AI is an AI that is created to solve a particular problem or perform a specific task.

● It is not a general AI and is only used for specific purpose.
● For example, the AI that was used to beat the chess grandmaster is a weak AI as that
serves only 1 purpose but it can do it efficiently.

2) Strong AI:

● Strong AI is more difficult to create than weak AI.

● It is a general purpose intelligence that can demonstrate human abilities.
● Human abilities such as learning from experience, reasoning, etc. can be demonstrated by
this AI.
3) Super Intelligence

● As stated by a leading AI thinker Nick Bostrom, “Super Intelligence is an AI that is much

smarter than the best human brains in practically every field”.
● It ranges from a machine being just smarter than a human to a machine being trillion
times smarter than a human.
● Super Intelligence is the ultimate power of AI.
An AI system is composed of an agent and its environment. An agent(e.g., human or
robot) is anything that can perceive its environment through sensors and acts upon that
environment through effectors. Intelligent agents must be able to set goals and achieve
them.

AI has developed a large number of tools to solve the most difficult problems in
computer science, like:

● Search and optimization

● Logic
● Probabilistic methods for uncertain reasoning
● Classifiers and statistical learning methods
● Neural networks
● Control theory
● Languages

High-profile examples of AI include autonomous vehicles (such as drones and self-driving cars),
medical diagnosis, creating art (such as poetry), proving mathematical theorems, playing games
(such as Chess or Go), search engines (such as Google search), virtual assistants (such as Siri),
image recognition in photographs, spam filtering, prediction of judicial decisions[204] and
targeted online advertisements. Other applications include Healthcare, Automotive, Finance,
Video games, etc

Eight types of intelligence

The research carried out identifies the existence of areas in the human brain that correspond
to certain spaces of knowledge, all of which are distinct and relatively independent of each
other. Here are the eight types of intelligence explained one by one.

1. Logical-mathematical intelligence

Their problem-solving ability is very striking and is often related to a type of non-verbal
intelligence, i.e. they can know the answer to a certain problem long before they verbalize it.
Children with this type of intelligence are good at solving mysteries or brain teasers, doing
puzzles, logic exercises, counting or doing calculations, computer problems and playing strategy
games.

2. Linguistic intelligence

Children with this type of intelligence are skilled and have preferences for activities such as
reading, talking, telling stories and jokes, writing poems, learning languages and playing
word games.

3. Spatial Intelligence

This type of intelligence shows patterns that prove the kid’s capacity to think in three
dimensions. People who develop spatial intelligence are good at solving spatial problems such
as drawing and painting, reading maps, looking at pictures, solving mazes, or playing
construction games.

4. Musical Intelligence

It is typical of children with an innate ability to learn different sounds, which translates into a
great ability to sing, listen to music, play instruments, compose songs, enjoy concerts and
follow different rhythms. This type of intelligence may notice off-key notes that others do not
and can easily memorize songs and tunes.

5. Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence

It is the ability to use the whole body in the expression of ideas and feelings, and the facility in
the use of the hands to transform elements.

Children who show kinesthetic intelligence are good at dancing, acting, imitating gestures or
expressions, playing sports, running, moving and jumping.

6. Intrapersonal Intelligence
It distinguishes those who know themselves best. These children like to work independently, set
goals and focus on achieving them, understand their feelings and know their strengths and
weaknesses.

7. Interpersonal Intelligence

As opposed to intrapersonal intelligence, it is common among kids that are good at talking,
working in teams, helping others, mediating conflicts and meeting new people.

8. Naturalistic intelligence

Related to the attraction towards environmental issues, plants and animals. People with this kind
of intelligence enjoy doing activities such as camping, hiking, caring for animals, learning
about nature, recycling and caring for the environment.

History of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is not a new word and not a new technology for researchers. This
technology is much older than you would imagine. Even there are the myths of Mechanical men
in Ancient Greek and Egyptian Myths. Following are some milestones in the history of AI which
defines the journey from the AI generation to till date development.

Maturation of Artificial Intelligence (1943-1952)

● Year 1943: The first work which is now recognized as AI was done by Warren
McCulloch and Walter pits in 1943. They proposed a model of artificial neurons.
● Year 1949: Donald Hebb demonstrated an updating rule for modifying the connection
strength between neurons. His rule is now called Hebbian learning.
● Year 1950: The Alan Turing who was an English mathematician and pioneered Machine
learning in 1950. Alan Turing publishes "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" in
which he proposed a test. The test can check the machine's ability to exhibit intelligent
behavior equivalent to human intelligence, called a Turing test.
The birth of Artificial Intelligence (1952-1956)
● Year 1955: An Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon created the "first artificial
intelligence program"Which was named as "Logic Theorist". This program had proved
38 of 52 Mathematics theorems, and find new and more elegant proofs for some
theorems.
● Year 1956: The word "Artificial Intelligence" first adopted by American Computer
scientist John McCarthy at the Dartmouth Conference. For the first time, AI coined as an
academic field.

At that time high-level computer languages such as FORTRAN, LISP, or COBOL were
invented. And the enthusiasm for AI was very high at that time.

The golden years-Early enthusiasm (1956-1974)

● Year 1966: The researchers emphasized developing algorithms which can solve
mathematical problems. Joseph Weizenbaum created the first chatbot in 1966, which was
named as ELIZA.
● Year 1972: The first intelligent humanoid robot was built in Japan which was named as
WABOT-1.

The first AI winter (1974-1980)

● The duration between years 1974 to 1980 was the first AI winter duration. AI winter
refers to the time period where computer scientist dealt with a severe shortage of funding
from government for AI researches.
● During AI winters, an interest of publicity on artificial intelligence was decreased.

A boom of AI (1980-1987)
● Year 1980: After AI winter duration, AI came back with "Expert System". Expert
systems were programmed that emulate the decision-making ability of a human expert.
● In the Year 1980, the first national conference of the American Association of Artificial
Intelligence was held at Stanford University.

The second AI winter (1987-1993)

● The duration between the years 1987 to 1993 was the second AI Winter duration.
● Again Investors and government stopped in funding for AI research as due to high cost
but not efficient result. The expert system such as XCON was very cost effective.

The emergence of intelligent agents (1993-2011)

● Year 1997: In the year 1997, IBM Deep Blue beats world chess champion, Gary
Kasparov, and became the first computer to beat a world chess champion.
● Year 2002: for the first time, AI entered the home in the form of Roomba, a vacuum
cleaner.
● Year 2006: AI came in the Business world till the year 2006. Companies like Facebook,
Twitter, and Netflix also started using AI.

Deep learning, big data and artificial general intelligence (2011-

present)
● Year 2011: In the year 2011, IBM's Watson won jeopardy, a quiz show, where it had to
solve the complex questions as well as riddles. Watson had proved that it could
understand natural language and can solve tricky questions quickly.
● Year 2012: Google has launched an Android app feature "Google now", which was able
to provide information to the user as a prediction.
● Year 2014: In the year 2014, Chatbot "Eugene Goostman" won a competition in the
infamous "Turing test."
● Year 2018: The "Project Debater" from IBM debated on complex topics with two master
debaters and also performed extremely well.
● Google has demonstrated an AI program "Duplex" which was a virtual assistant and
which had taken hairdresser appointment on call, and lady on other side didn't notice that
she was talking with the machine.

Now AI has developed to a remarkable level. The concept of Deep learning, big data, and data
science are now trending like a boom. Nowadays companies like Google, Facebook, IBM, and
Amazon are working with AI and creating amazing devices. The future of Artificial Intelligence
is inspiring and will come with high intelligence.
The Five Basic Components of AI, New
Software Development

Despite the number of products and services that utilize artificial intelligence in their respective
functions, many people may be wondering about the different components that allow AI to
function in the first place. With this being said, while the development of artificial intelligence is
a nuanced and complex process, it does not ddiffer
iffer from any other machine or system in that there
are basic rules that govern its operation. As such, the five basic components of artificial
intelligence include learning, reasoning, problem problem-solving,
solving, perception, and language
understanding. Through the implementation of these five basic components, software developers
and engineers have been able to create a multitude of technologies and services that consumers
around the globe have come to covet and revere.

Learning
Just as is the case with human beings
beings,, the first step in the development process as it pertains to
artificial intelligence is the learning stage. For example, when teaching a child how to ride a
bicycle for the first time, there will be a trial and error process in which the child makes mistakes
mista
and falls off their bike, gradually learning the rules and techniques that are needed to effectively
handle the task at hand. In the context of the development of artificial intelligence, the learning
process involves the memorization of individual items including different solutions to problems,
vocabulary, and foreign languages, among others. Through this learning process, programs that
utilize artificial intelligence are able to keep notes of all actions or moves that led to positive
results, allowing the program to leverage this knowledge within its data should similar problems
arise in the future.

Reasoning
The second major component of artificial intelligence is reasoning. While the concept of mental
reasoning is something that has largely been limited to the human mind for much of recorded
history, much of the development of artificial intelligence hinges on software programs that are
able to draw conclusions and inferences from a situation, without the need for human
interference. Furthermore, these inferences are divided into two categories, inductive and
deductive reasoning. To this point, the use of inductive reasoning has allowed computer
programmers and software developers to create products and systems that achieve consistent
results when faced with a particular problem or issue, whether this is in terms of a broad topic
such as automatic transcription and translation, or a more niche application such as the cloud-
based grammar and writing assistant Grammarly.

Problem-solving
The third major component that makes up the development of artificial intelligence programs
and systems is problem-solving. As the entire premise of artificial intelligence is the creation of
computer programs and systems that solve problems in a manner similar to that of human beings,
problem-solving is perhaps the most pivotal component in terms of the development of AI. In the
most basic of terms, an AI’s problem-solving ability is based on the application and
manipulation of data, where the solution needs to be x. Alternatively, in more advanced
applications, problem-solving techniques in the context of AI can include the development of
efficient algorithms, performing root cause analysis with the goal of discovering a desirable
solution, and heuristics.

Perception
The fourth major component in the development of artificial intelligence programs and systems
is perception. In keeping with comparisons to the function of the human mind, the way in which
individuals perceive the world around them is critical to the manner in which they solve
problems in their respective lives. As it relates to artificial intelligence, perception is achieved
through the utilization of different sense-organs, whether they be real or artificial. As human
perception itself is extremely complicated, enabling artificial intelligence programs to perceive
certain inputs and information can prove to be extremely challenging. To provide a real-world
application of perception in terms of artificial intelligence, many self-driving cars function
through the perception of different physical objects within a given environment, ranging from
traffic lights, weather conditions, buildings, and highways and roads, just to name a few.

Language understanding
The final component that makes up the development of artificial intelligence is language
understanding. Put in the simplest of terms, language understanding in the context of the
development of artificial intelligence can be defined as a set of different systems signs that
justify their various means or methods using convention. To this point, as the vast majority of
artificial intelligence programs and systems are developed within the English-speaking world, a
major component of the creation of many such programs and systems is enabling them to
understand the English language. Through this language understanding, software developers are
able to ensure that computer programs are able to efficiently execute their respective functions
and operations.

From artificial intelligence assistants such as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa to partially
autonomous vehicles such as those that are currently being developed by major electric and clean
energy company Tesla, all products, goods, and services that implement artificial intelligence do
so in accordance with five basic components. Through the application of these components, AI
systems are able to work effectively without the need for human inputs, as software programs
that make use of artificial intelligence are able to govern themselves in conjunction with the
codes or rules that are provided to them by software engineers and developers. As such, while
these components are already being used to create a wide range of product offerings, there are
many more that will surely be on the horizon in the near future.
