1. This paper consists of ten (10) questions.

2. Answer all questions. Each question carries ten (10) marks.

3. All work done in answering each question must be clearly shown.

4. Non-programmable scientific calculator and mathematical tables may be used.

5. All writings must be done in blue or black ink except drawings must be done in pencil.

3. (a) Find the solution of the following set of simultaneous equations:


2x + y = 6
x2 + 2y − 12 = 0
(b) Consider two numbers which such that the square of the second number minus
fifteen the result is five time the first number if three minus the first number
equal the second number substracting twice the second numbers:
(i) Form equations
(ii) Find the numbers.

4. (a). The intensity of sound varies directly as the amplitude and inversely as square
of the distance from the source If the intensity is 50 units for amplitude 5 at a
distance 2 metre from the source. Find the intersity for amplitude 8 at a
distance of 4metre from the source.
(b) What percentage rate of compound interest per annum will Tsh 600,000/=
amount to Tsh 800,000/= in 5 year if the interest is calculate is calculate half
yearly.
(c) 9 workers working 8 hours a day to complete piece of work in 52 days
How long will it take for 13 workers working 6 hours/day.

7. (a). Find first derivative of the function f(x) = 3x2 + x + 1 using first principles.
(b). Find the first derivation for each of the following:
(i). f(x) = cos (2x +1)
(ii). f(x) = 3x

(c) A curve is describe by the function 3x2 − 7y2 + 4xy − 8x = 0, Calculate the
gradient of the curve at the points (−1,1)

8. (a) Use the product rule, to find the first derivative of function f(x) = (x+y)
