People often believe that success comes only through intelligence, but hard
work and determination are equally important. Many talented individuals fail
because they do not remain consistent in their efforts, while ordinary people
achieve great things through discipline and persistence. Success also
requires patience because achievements rarely come overnight. Failures and
difficulties are a natural part of life and should be treated as opportunities to
learn rather than reasons to give up. A person who stays focused, works
honestly, and continues striving despite challenges is more likely to achieve
lasting success than someone who depends only on natural ability.

“The Influential Role of Parents in Shaping a Child`s Personality”
A child’s personality begins to develop from early childhood. Parents who teach
kindness, honesty, discipline, and respect help their children become good human
beings. Children often copy the behavior of their parents. If parents speak politely,
show patience, and treat others with respect, children naturally learn these qualities.
On the other hand, harsh behavior, neglect, and constant anger can negatively affect a
child’s personality and emotional health.
“Character of a child is not formed by words alone, but by the actions of
parents.”
Parenting constitutes the primary socialization agent in child development. As
Bronfenbrenner stated, "The family is the child's first and most influential
teacher." Research indicates that approximately 50-70% of personality traits and
behavioral patterns are established during early childhood through parental influence.
The home environment serves as the foundational context where children acquire
initial cognitive, emotional, and social competencies.
Contemporary developmental psychology emphasizes that parental behavior functions
as a model for observational learning, as proposed by Bandura's Social Learning
Theory. Bandura noted, "Learning would be exceedingly laborious if people had
to rely solely on the effects of their own actions to inform them what to do."
Children internalize values, communication styles, and emotional regulation patterns
through consistent exposure to parental conduct. A supportive and responsive
parenting style correlates strongly with the development of self-esteem, resilience,
and prosocial behavior in adolescents.
From an Islamic perspective, parental responsibility extends beyond physical care to
moral and spiritual guidance. The Quranic injunction, "O you who believe! Save
your selves and your families from a Fire” establishes accountability for ethical
upbringing. Similarly, the Hadith stating "The best gift a father can give his child
is good manners" aligns with modern psychological findings that emphasize
character education over material provision. As Nelson Mandela observed,
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the
world," highlighting that parental guidance is a form of education.
However, academic analysis requires acknowledgment of complexity. While
authoritative parenting promotes positive outcomes, excessive control or "helicopter
parenting" can inhibit autonomy and decision-making skills. Baumrind herself
warned that "parental control must be balanced with warmth and
responsiveness." Furthermore, in the digital era, parental mediation of technology
use has emerged as a critical variable. Studies show that unsupervised exposure to
social media correlates with increased anxiety and reduced attention spans among
youth. Effective parenting therefore demands a balance between guidance and
independence.
Educational involvement also plays a pivotal role. Parents who maintain consistent
engagement with both formal education and ethical instruction produce children with
higher academic achievement and stronger moral reasoning. Balanced upbringing that
integrates religious values with modern competencies prepares individuals for
complex societal demands.
In conclusion, parents function as the most influential determinant of personality
formation. As Marian Wright Edelman stated, "You can't be what you can't see,"
underscoring that children model themselves on their parents. Empirical evidence and
Islamic teachings converge on the necessity of intentional, balanced, and ethically
grounded parenting. In an era of rapid technological change, responsible parental
engagement remains essential for developing psychologically healthy and socially
responsible individuals.
