What is Arduino UNO?
Arduino UNO is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P chip.
It acts as the brain of many DIY electronics and robotics projects. You can
connect sensors, motors, LEDs, and more to control them with code.
Key Features of Arduino UNO
Microcontroller: ATmega328P
Operating Voltage: 5V
Input Voltage (recommended): 7V – 12V (can take 6–20V)
Digital I/O Pins: 14 (out of which 6 can provide PWM output)
Analog Input Pins: 6 (A0–A5)
PWM Pins: 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11
Flash Memory: 32 KB (0.5 KB used by bootloader)
SRAM: 2 KB
EEPROM: 1 KB
Clock Speed: 16 MHz
USB Connection: Type-B USB (for programming & power)
Important Sections on the Board
1. USB Port – Connects Arduino to your computer for power & uploading code.
2. Power Jack – Connect external power (battery or adapter).
3. Digital Pins (0–13) – For input/output (buttons, LEDs, sensors).
4. Analog Pins (A0–A5) – For reading analog signals (temperature, light
sensors).
5. Reset Button – Restarts your program.
6. Power Pins – 5V, 3.3V, GND for powering sensors & modules.
7. Microcontroller (ATmega328P) – The brain of the board.
Types of Arduino Boards
There are many types of Arduino boards, but the most
commonly used are:
1. Arduino UNO – Standard, most popular board (ATmega328P).
2. Arduino Mega 2560 – More pins & memory (great for big projects like 3D
printers, CNC).
3. Arduino Nano – Small size, same features as UNO (good for compact
projects).
4. Arduino Micro / Pro Micro – Even smaller, based on ATmega32U4 (has USB
built-in).
5. Arduino Leonardo – Can act as a keyboard/mouse (also ATmega32U4).
6. Arduino Due – 32-bit ARM processor, faster, works on 3.3V.
7. Arduino MKR Series – Designed for IoT (WiFi, LoRa, GSM, etc. built-in).
8. Arduino Lilypad – Circular, made for wearable electronics.
SMD vs. SMT (and why it matters in Arduino)
People often confuse these two, so here’s the clear difference:
SMT (Surface-Mount Technology)
A manufacturing process used to mount electronic components directly on
the PCB surface.
Replaces older Through-Hole Technology (THT) where pins go through board
holes.
Faster, cheaper, and allows smaller circuits.
SMD (Surface-Mount Device)
The actual component (chip, resistor, capacitor, IC) designed for SMT.
Example: ATmega328P SMD version (flat chip soldered directly on PCB).
Compared to DIP (Dual Inline Package) chips that you can remove easily,
SMD chips are not socketed — they are fixed.
What is NodeMCU?
NodeMCU is an open-source development board based on the ESP8266 Wi-
Fi SoC (System on Chip).
Unlike Arduino UNO, it has Wi-Fi built-in, making it perfect for IoT (Internet of
Things) projects.
It runs on Lua scripting language or the Arduino IDE (C/C++).
Key Features of NodeMCU (ESP8266)
Microcontroller: Tensilica 32-bit RISC CPU @ 80–160 MHz
Flash Memory: 4 MB
SRAM: 64 KB + 96 KB
⚠
Operating Voltage: 3.3V ( not 5V tolerant on I/O)
Digital I/O Pins: 11–13 usable GPIOs (depends on version)
Analog Input: 1 pin (10-bit resolution)
PWM Pins: All digital pins support PWM
Communication: UART, SPI, I²C, I²S
Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n (2.4 GHz) with TCP/IP stack
Programming: USB to UART (via CH340/CP2102 chip)
Advantages of NodeMCU over Arduino UNO
1. Wi-Fi Built-in – No need for extra modules like ESP8266 or Ethernet shield.
2. Faster CPU – 80–160 MHz vs Arduino UNO’s 16 MHz.
3. More Memory – 4 MB Flash vs 32 KB Flash in UNO.
4. Compact & Cheaper – Smaller size, often cheaper than UNO.
5. Supports IoT – Direct cloud connectivity (MQTT, HTTP, Firebase).
Limitations of NodeMCU
Works only on 3.3V logic (using 5V sensors requires a level shifter).
Fewer GPIO pins compared to Arduino Mega.
Slightly more complex for complete beginners.
Common Applications
Smart Home (IoT)
Wi-Fi Controlled Robots
Cloud-connected Sensors (Temperature, Humidity, etc.)
Home Automation (Lights, Fans, Appliances)
Data Logging to Google Sheets, Firebase, Thingspeak

What is a Sensor?
A sensor is a device that detects or measures physical changes in the
environment (like temperature, light, motion, gas, etc.) and converts them into
electrical signals that a microcontroller (Arduino, NodeMCU, Raspberry Pi) can
understand.
In short: Sensor = Input device for our projects.
Types of Common Sensors in Robotics / IoT
I’ll group them for clarity:

How Sensors Connect
Digital Sensors → Give output HIGH (1) / LOW (0). (Example: IR sensor, PIR
sensor)
Analog Sensors → Give variable voltage depending on reading. (Example:
LDR, Soil moisture, Temperature sensor)
Why Sensors are Important?
Without sensors, boards (Arduino/NodeMCU/Pi) can’t interact with the real
world.
Arduino = brain
Actuators (motors, relays) = muscles
Sensors = eyes, ears, nose, skin
What is Arduino IDE?
IDE = Integrated Development Environment
Arduino IDE is the official software used to write, compile, and upload code
(called sketches) to Arduino boards.
It’s simple, beginner-friendly, and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Supports many boards like Arduino UNO, Mega, Nano, NodeMCU, ESP32, etc.
Features of Arduino IDE
1. Code Editor – Write programs in C/C++ with Arduino functions.
2. Verify/Compile Button – Checks code for errors.
3. Upload Button – Sends the code to the board via USB.
4. Serial Monitor – A built-in tool to communicate with Arduino (print sensor
values, debug).
5. Board Manager – Select which board (UNO, Mega, NodeMCU, etc.) you’re
using.
6. Library Manager – Install libraries for sensors/modules (DHT, LCD, Servo,
etc.).
What is a Library in Arduino?
A library is a collection of pre-written code that makes it easier to use
sensors, displays, motors, or communication modules.
Instead of writing low-level code, you just include a library and use simple
functions.
Example: Using the Servo library, you can move a servo motor with
[Link](90); instead of manually generating PWM signals.
