Chapter One (Introduction)
1. Background of Study
i. What is oil price (historical setting of the work)
The history behind the study such like:
Nuanced
Funnel approach (why it matters globally, then down to why it matters in Nigeria)
ii. What is the geographical settings (geographical context)
iii. The Empirical Settings
iv. The Theoretical Settings
v. Situate the current study; introduce demand-side factor (GDP, fuel, transport)
2. Statement of the Problem
A. What is the problem (present the problem in the first paragraph, explain the problem)
B. What are the consequences of the problem
C. Intervention in solving the problem
D. Outcome of the intervention: After the outcome “BUT” what’s still remaining inspite
E. Areas not addressed: What remain undone (Gaps)
Gaps Types
i. Policy Gap
ii. Theoretical Gap
iii. Empirical Gap
iv. Methodological Gap
v. Geographical Gap
vi. Temporary Gap
F. How your current study intends to fill the gaps: What is your current study going to do in light
of unexplored areas; what justify your current study
3. Objective of the Study
Broad Objective Specific Objectives
A. The broad objective: To evaluate (operationalization of the topic), e.g., to evaluate the
effect of (GDP, transport, fuel consumption) as a driver of economic growth in Nigeria.
B. The specific objectives
C. Time scope (justify it)
D. Geographical scope
List the topic first
4. Research Question
It does not require a yes or no answer, it is a fluid, probing, indirect question.
A probing question is an investigative question.
A flaw → means your style
Research questions are tailored to specific objectives so that if the objective is answered, the
objective is said to be achieved.
Some expressions are:
i) To what extent
ii) By how far
iii) By what degree
iv) To what magnitude
v) By how much
5. Research Hypotheses
A. Causal Hypothesis: what’s driving what; who impacted
B. Relational Hypothesis: direction of relationship
a. Null – Negative form (what to reject)
b. Alternate – The research objective
Note: Research language doesn’t accept null; rather we say “Refuse to Reject Null”
A. Direction (use this)
B. Magnitude (don’t use)
6. Research Significance of the Study
Who benefits? How? this looks at the value addition of the study
A) The topical approach
i) Policy ii) Social iii) Research Significance
Policy – How changes impact this.
Social Significance – The benefit to the society.
Research Significance:
A. How will it add to existing knowledge
B. How will it catalyze future research
b) Stakeholder Approach: Single out individual e.g. govt, household, firm
7) Scope of the Study
Nigeria
2013 – 2023
Demand side variable only
