Analysis of challenges that I faced in unit / task.
I have now completed Unit 3 of the PTLLS course. The challenges I faced in this unit were
being able to provide a 30-minute presentation on my chosen subject ‘fire fighters uniforms
and rank markings’. Because this subject is second nature to me, I was having difficulty
trying to explain certain areas in to a context for the presentation so all learners would be
able to understand without being too technical on the subject which really in my own
specialism, I have to go in to great detail.
How I dealt with this, and why I took this approach.
I dealt with these challenges by looking at my session plan, and going through my
presentation over and over. I presented my work in front of my own work colleagues and
they were able to highlight areas of my presentation to which I should remove parts as it was
going far too technical for who I’d be presenting too. I removed some areas and tried to keep
to my session plan. I also made sure I had the uniforms to take with me, this would be
valuable to the learners to get a full understanding of what I was presenting.
What went well and why?
By bringing in the uniforms for the learners to feel and touch was hugely popular as all the
learners related the presentation a lot more when they had the physical object at their
disposal. It was also beneficial for me and the learners to pass around the operational
garments during specific parts of the presentation again the learners related more with what
I was talking about during each presentation slide and it created good discussions between
myself and the learners.
What I need to do to improve and how I plan to do this
The presentation was a success with a lot of information being passed in what I thought was
short amount of time and the learners were very enthusiastic with regards to questions and
also enjoyed the small pop quiz at the end. Unfortunately for the last 15 minutes of my
presentation some of the slides text was very poor and some of the learners were finding it
very hard to read. I should have gone through my presentation one last time to make sure
everything was set up correctly and ready. I must in the future remember to check things
over once more just before teachings begin so little things such as this don’t happen again.
Also, the session plan time didn’t reflect on my presentation timings, which hampered the
questions from the learners as I had, ran out time.
