1.1 Differentiate between the following concepts


1.1.1 Natural Disaster

A natural disaster is a destructive event caused by natural processes of the earth, such as
floods, droughts, earthquakes, or storms, which result in loss of life, property damage, and
environmental destruction.

1.1.2 National Disaster

A national disaster is a disaster that affects a large part of the country and requires
intervention and support from national government structures because local and provincial
resources are insufficient.

1.2 State THREE forms of natural disasters that Limpopo Province


experienced since 2024.

1. Floods
2. Droughts
3. Severe storms and strong winds

1.3 Mention TWO state institutions that deal with natural disasters in South
Africa.

1.4 Discuss ONE cause of floods in Limpopo Province.

One major cause of floods in Limpopo is heavy and prolonged rainfall. When excessive rain
falls over a short period, rivers overflow and drainage systems become overwhelmed, causing
water to flood homes, roads, and communities.

2.1 Name ONE law that protects South African citizens
against natural disasters.
The Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002.
2.2 Describe TWO ways in which the above law protects citizens against
natural disasters.

1. The law establishes disaster management centres that coordinate disaster prevention,
preparedness, response, and recovery.
2. It requires government departments to develop disaster management plans and
provide emergency assistance to affected communities.

2.3 Evaluate the negative effect of floods on food production.

Floods destroy crops, wash away fertile soil, and kill livestock. This reduces agricultural
production and can lead to food shortages. Farmers suffer financial losses and food prices
may increase, making it difficult for communities to access affordable food.

2.4 Recommend ONE strategy that communities can implement to protect


themselves against natural disasters such as floods.

Communities should establish early warning systems and educate residents about evacuation
procedures so that people can move to safer areas before flooding occurs.

3.2 Briefly discuss the impact of floods on the following:

3.3 Recommend ONE way in which the government could deal with flooding
in affected areas of Limpopo.

The government should improve drainage systems and strengthen flood-control infrastructure
such as dams, bridges, and storm-water channels. This would reduce flood damage and help
protect communities during periods of heavy rainfall.
