Problem Data:

Column Size = 450 mm x 450 mm

Unsupported Height = 3.5 m

Concrete Grade = M30

Steel Grade = Fe500

Factored Axial Load = 1800 kN

Step 1: Slenderness Check

Effective Length = 2275 mm

Slenderness Ratio = 5.06 (<12)

Hence, Short Column.

Step 2: Gross Area

Ag = 202500 mm²
Step 3: Longitudinal Reinforcement

Minimum Steel = 1620 mm²

Provide 8 Nos. 20 mm dia bars.

Area Provided = 2512 mm²

Percentage Steel = 1.24%

Step 4: Axial Load Capacity

Seismic Hoops:

10 mm dia closed ties with 135-degree hooks.

Column Cross Section:

450 mm x 450 mm column

8 Nos. 20 mm bars

10 mm closed ties

Special Ductile Detailing Requirements:

1. Minimum steel = 0.8%

2. Maximum steel = 6%

3. Closed hoops with 135-degree hooks.

4. No lap splices within beam-column joints.

5. Strong Column – Weak Beam criterion to be satisfied.

Final Design Summary:

Column Size: 450 mm x 450 mm
