Explain the importance of Sacred Groves.
Sacred Groves play an important role as a genebankforbiodiversityconservation.
In many area across the world it has been seen that the Groves are intact due to the
religious sentiments attached to them. These groves have species of plants and animals
that are ancient and therefore these are the only areas which are a huge source of genetic
material for the replication of forests, flora and fauna of any particular region. Groves
maintain soil fertility as well as the nutrient cycles of the land.
Somegroveshavepondsandstreamswhich supplywatertolocalcommunitiesandatthe same
time help to recharge ground waterin thearea.
They are considered as biodiversity areas, providingarefugeforanumberofspeciesof
floraandfauna,whichareotherwiseaffected by habitat destruction and hunting in
surroundingareas.
A number of medicinal plants which are rare and endangered are found in these Groves.
Local people worship the gods and Goddesses in these forest patches and do not cut or carry
anything from the Grove. This adds aesthetic beauty to the land as well.
Modern thoughts of nonbelief has now led to a lot of destruction of these groves and many
privately owned groves have been sold and cut for modern development activities such as
housing or agriculture. Contrary to this, the housing projects made herein are sold as housing
amongst the midst of nature, calm and quiet.
The sacred groves across the world are thus excellent places of ex- situ conservation
measures which the local people have been doing for a long while.
