1. COMPUTER HARDWARE AND SYSTEM STARTUP

> 🎯 TARGET LEARNING OUTCOMES

> - know the physical devices of a computer system and how each operates. (k, s, u, v)
> - assemble a computer system. (s, v)
> - safely start and shut down a computer system. (s, v)
> - use computer peripheral tools. (k, u, s, v)

> 🎯 OVERALL TOPIC COMPETENCY

> The learner understands the importance of the physical devices of a computer system and uses them in
everyday life.

Explanation of Concepts
Computer Hardware refers to the physical, tangible parts of a computer system that you can see and touch.
These are classified into:

• Input Devices: Tools used to feed data into the computer (e.g., Keyboard, Mouse, Scanner,
Microphone).
• Output Devices: Tools that display or produce the processed information (e.g., Monitor, Printer,
Speakers, Projector).
• Storage Media: Devices used to keep data for future use (e.g., Flash disk, Hard disk, CD/DVD).
• Processing Unit: The "brain" of the computer, primarily the System Unit which houses the CPU
(Central Processing Unit).

System Startup (Booting): This is the process of powering on a computer and loading the operating system.
3. Cold Boot: Starting a computer that is completely powered off.
4. Warm Boot: Restarting a computer that is already running (e.g., using "Restart" in Windows).

> ⚡ ACTIVE LEARNING CHECKPOINT

> Think-Pair-Share: Identify a peripheral device in your classroom or home. Describe why it is classified as
either input or output.

> 💡 SUGGESTED ACTIVE LEARNING & ICT INTEGRATION

> 1. Hardware Classification: In pairs, categorize a list of devices (Mouse, Keyboard, Printer, Monitor, Hard
disk) into Input, Output, or Storage.
> 2. Practical Assembly: Follow a step-by-step procedure to connect the System Unit to the Monitor,
Keyboard, and Mouse. Connect the power cable and perform a safe "Power On" and "Shutdown" procedure.
> 3. Peripheral Usage: Individually scan a document using a scanner, print a text file, and display a
presentation using a projector.

> Style: Technical scientific diagram. Subject: A central System Unit connected to various peripherals:
"Monitor" (Output), "Keyboard" (Input), "Mouse" (Input), "Printer" (Output), and "Flash Disk" (Storage).
Layout: Landscape. Labels: Each device clearly named with leader lines. Accuracy constraint: Must represent
standard desktop computer components per NCDC Uganda Lower Secondary curriculum.

2. FILE AND FOLDER MANAGEMENT

> 🎯 TARGET LEARNING OUTCOMES

> - use the different types of storage media to create, save and transfer files. (u, s, v)
> - convert units for data storage. (k, u)

> 🎯 OVERALL TOPIC COMPETENCY

> The learner understands the different types of storage media to store information following the structure of
files, folders, and directories.

Explanation of Concepts
Files and Folders:
• File: A collection of related data stored under a specific name (e.g., `[Link]`).
• Folder: A container used to organize files, similar to a physical file cabinet.

Data Storage Measurement:

Data is measured in bytes. You should know how to convert these units:
• 1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 Bytes
• 1 Megabyte (MB) = 1,024 KB
• 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 MB
• 1 Terabyte (TB) = 1,024 GB

> 🔭 BEYOND SYLLABUS ENRICHMENT

> Understanding that storage media like SSDs (Solid State Drives) are faster than traditional HDDs (Hard Disk
Drives) helps learners appreciate modern computer performance when saving large files.

> 💡 SUGGESTED ACTIVE LEARNING & ICT INTEGRATION

> 1. Data Conversion: Solve: "If a file is 2,048 KB, how many MB is it?" (Answer: 2 MB).
> 2. Folder Creation: Create a folder named "ICT_Work" on your desktop. Inside, create sub-folders for
"Notes" and "Assignments."
> 3. File Transfer: Save a drawing created in Paint into the "ICT_Work" folder, then copy that file to a Flash
disk.

> 🚩 CROSS-CUTTING ISSUE INTEGRATION

> Environmental Awareness: Discuss the importance of reusing digital storage devices to reduce e-waste rather
than discarding flash disks or CDs unnecessarily.

SAMPLE ASSESSMENT ITEMS

5. Explain the difference between an input device and an output device, providing one example of each.
(Model answer: Input devices send data to the computer, e.g., Keyboard. Output devices display information
from the computer, e.g., Monitor.)
6. A student has a document of size 2,048 MB. How many Gigabytes (GB) is this file? (Model answer: 2
GB.)
7. Describe the safe procedure for shutting down a Windows computer. (Model answer: Click the Start
button, select Power, then click Shutdown.)

> 1. Subject: ICT
> 2. Topic/Subtopic: Computer Hardware and File Management
> 3. Grade Level: Senior One
> 4. Overall Topic Competence: Understanding physical devices and data organization
> 5. Learning Outcome(s): Know the physical devices of a computer system (k, s, u, v); Use storage media to
save and transfer files (u, s, v).
