ASSIGNMENT

CLASS 12A

SUBJECT-PHYSICS

Q1. A rod of length L has a uniform positive charge per unit length λ and a total charge Q.
Calculate the electric field at a point P that is located along the long axis of the rod and a
distance x from one end
Q2. A ring of radius R carries a uniformly distributed positive total charge Q. Calculate the electric
field due to the ring at a point P lying a distance x from its centre along the central axis
perpendicular to the plane of the ring.
Q3. A uniform electric field is directed along the x axis between parallel plates of charge
separated by a distance d as shown in Figure. A positive point charge q of mass m is released
from rest at a point A next to the positive plate and accelerates to a point B next to the
negative plate. (A) Find the speed of the particle at B by modelling it as particle under
constant acceleration.

Q4. Figure shows the electric field lines for two charged particles separated by a small distance.
(a) Determine the ratio q1 /q2. (b) What are the signs of q1 and q2 ?

Q5. A spherical gaussian surface surrounds a point charge q. Describe what happens to the total
flux through the surface if (A) the charge is tripled, (B) the radius of the sphere is doubled,
(C) the surface is changed to a cube, and (D) the charge is moved to another location inside
the surface
Q6. An insulating solid sphere of radius R has a uniform volume charge density ρ and carries a
total positive charge Q
Calculate the magnitude of electric field (A)outside the sphere (B) inside the sphere
(C) plot graph showing variation of electric field with distance from the centre
Q7. Explain why Gauss’s law cannot be used to calculate the electric field near an electric dipole,
a charged disk, or a tri angle with a point charge at each corner.
Q8. A solid insulating sphere of radius a carry a net positive charge Q uniformly dis tributed
throughout its volume. A conducting spherical shell of inner radius b and outer radius c is
concentric with the solid sphere and carries a net charge -2Q. Using Gauss’s law, find the
electric field in the regions labelled 1 ,2 ,3,4 in Active Figure and the charge distribution on
the shell when the entire system is in electrostatic equilibrium.

Q9. A uniform electric field exists in a region of space containing no charges. What can you
conclude about the net electric flux through a gaussian surface placed in this region of
space?
Q10. A particle with charge Q is located immediately above the center of the flat face of a
hemisphere of radius R as shown in Figure. What is the electric flux (a) through the curved
surface and (b) through the flat face?

Q11. A uniformly charged disk has radius R and surface charge density σ. (A)Find the electric
potential at a point P along the perpendicular central axis of the disk
Q12. Two spherical conductors of radii r1 and r2 are separated by a distance much greater than the
radius of either sphere. The spheres are connected by a conducting wire .. The charges on
the spheres in equilibrium are q1 and q2, respectively, and they are uniformly charged. Find
the ratio of the magnitudes of the electric fields at the surfaces of the spheres
Q13. . A wire having a uniform linear charge density λ is bent into the shape shown in Figure . Find
the electric potential at point O.

Q14. A parallel-plate capacitor has a plate separation d and plate area A. An uncharged metallic
slab of thickness a is inserted midway between the plates. (A)Find the capacitance of the
device. Show that the capacitance of the original capacitor is unaffected by the insertion of
the metallic slab if the slab is infinitesimally thin.
Q15. Three capacitors are connected to a battery as shown in Figure. Their capacitances are C 1 =
3C, C2 = C, and C3 = 5C. (a) What is the equivalent capacitance of this set of capacitors? (b)
State the ranking of the capacitors according to the charge they store, from largest to
smallest. (c) Rank the capacitors according to the potential differences across them, from
largest to smallest. (d)What If? Assume C3 is increased. Explain what happens to the charge
stored by each of the capacitors.
