STS 1

The document introduces the concepts of science, technology, and society, defining science as a method of understanding natural events through observation and the scientific method. It outlines the steps of scientific inquiry, including making observations, forming hypotheses, conducting experiments, and communicating results. Technology is described as the practical application of scientific knowledge to create tools and systems that improve human life, while society is defined as a group of people organized to make collective decisions.

INTRO TO SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

WHAT IS SCIENCE?
• A way in which answers related to NATURAL event are proposed
– Forming a possible explanation for why or how natural event
happens based on observation and evidence
• A way in which people can learned and UNDERSTAND events in
the NATURAL WORLD
• Based on OBSERVABLE EVENTS
• A study of NATURAL WORLD
• A method of DISCOVERY and UNDERSTANDING by using a
PROBLEM SOLVING process called the? SCIENTIFIC METHOD

SCIENCE
• Came from the latin word “SCIENTIA” which means KNOWLEDGE
• A SYSTEM OF ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE based on SCIENTIFIC
METHOD as a PROCESS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS or develop an
understanding of nature that involves TESTING POSSIBLE
ANSWERS

These Branches can intertwine:

BIOCHEMISTRY: study of matter of LIVING THINGS
GEOPHYSICS: study of FORCES THAT AFFECT EARTH

6 STEPS TO THE SCIENTIFIC IDENTIFICATION

• MAKE AN OBSERVATION
• FORM A HYPOTHESIS
• TEST THE HYPOTHESIS
• COLLECT, ORGANIZE AND ANALYZE THE DATA
• DRAW CONCLUSION
• COMMUNICATE THE RESULT

MAKE AN OBSERVATION:
• Observation based on senses or tools / 3 senses – sight,
smell,touch,etc
• Observation of natural events usually raise a question
- Why did the water rise when the candle went out?
FORM A HYPOTHESIS:
• Based on your observation a hypothesis is formed that tries to
explain your observation or answer your question
TEST THE HYPOTHESIS:
• CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS is an experiment that tests only one
factor at a time by
- CONTROLLED EXPERIMENTS are USED TO TEST HYPOTHESIS
COLLECT, ORGANIZE, AND ANALYZE THE DATA:
• Data collected from experiments
- Data is defined as; recorded observations or measurements
(qualitative=description, quantative= number data)
DRAW CONCLUSIONS;
• Scientist decide whether the result of the experiment support a
hypothesis
• When the hypothesis is not supportedby the test the scientist
must find another explanation for what they have observed

2
-No expirement is a failure
COMMUNICATE THE RESULT
• Results must be communicated in the form of a written paper
or presentation.
• Communication helps others scientist performing the same
experiments to see if the result of your experiment are the same
result

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY?
• It refers to methods, system and devices which are the result of
scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes
• Human attempt to change the world by creating products that
make our life easier
• It is the application of scientific knowledge, laws, and principles
to produce services, materials, tools, and machines aimed at
solving real world problems

TECHNOLOGY
• Came from Greek Word Techne, Meaning “art, skill, or cunning
of hand”

Science and Technology

They work together and depend on one another:
• Science: Observing, studying, experimenting to find the nature
of things
• Technology: Using science to make human lives easier
Ex; Cellphone, laptop, cars, machines, etc

3
What is Society
• A large group of people who live together in an organized way
making decisions about how to do things and sharing the work
that need to be done

What is society?
• Came from Latin word “societas” “mai” means “A friendly
association with others”
